William Russell
Passed away on August 5, 2012, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
He was born on January 28, 1933, to Russell and Grayce (Scheer) Wynd, in Oklahoma City, OK.
He was active in track in high school, winning the Kansas State Low Hurdles championship in his senior year.
He was also active in Boy Scouts, and received recognition as an Eagle Scout.
He attended Oklahoma State University and was designated as a distinguished military graduate.
After serving 18 months in Korea, he returned to attend Army Aviation School in Texas, where he met and married his wife, Sally.
He was subsequently assigned to Germany, where he resigned his position to attend graduate school at Auburn University.
After earning his M.S., he taught forestry and economics for five years at Michigan Technological University, and later attended Michigan State where he earned an MBA and Ph.D. William’s early interest in the Pacific Northwest prompted him to apply for a teaching position at Eastern Washington University, where he taught marketing for 27 years.
During the later part of his tenure, he and his wife traveled to Russia and the Ukraine under professor-exchange programs, and also went to Bulgaria under a Fullbright teaching scholarship, where he taught much-needed courses in marketing.
Bill served the community as a Cheney City Councilman and a member of the board of directors at the Cheney Care Center.
He enjoyed many outdoor activities, particularly with his mules.
Dr. Wynd’s wife, Sally, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his son, James (Wendy), his daughter, Katherine Owens (Jack), brother, James (Marilyn), and grandsons Alec and Brenen Wynd, and Jeffrey and Eric Owens, and his special friend, Carole Johnson.
A celebration of life will be held at the family home at a later date.
