Hambletonian history

Market Share won the $1.5 million Hambletonian at the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, N.J., on Saturday, putting Linda Toscano (left in photo) in the record book as the first female trainer to win trotting’s premier race. Market Share stormed to the front at the top of the stretch, then held off two late closers to win the race for 3-year-old trotting colts. Toscano (pictured right) had one of the favorites last year in Chapter Seven, but the horse finished seventh. It was also the first Hambletonian victory for driver Tim Tetrick (right in photo), one of the most successful drivers in the history of harness racing. Market Share, a New Jersey bred who was a $16,000 purchase as a yearling, went off as the second choice at 4-1. The winning time was 1:52.1. – Associated Press
