Remembering 9/11

On Sunday, several area churches will present events and special services to mark the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

One Peace, Many Paths and the Spokane Interfaith Council will hold an interfaith gathering focusing on the topic “Toward a Lasting Peace: Next Steps for Mother Earth and Her People.”

Speakers will include members of the Jewish, Buddhist, Christian, Native American, Baha’i, Sufi, Hindu, New Thought, Lutheran, Muslim, Unitarian Universalist and Earth-based spirituality traditions.

• The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., will present an Evensong service at 7 p.m. The evening will include invited representatives from the police and fire departments and the military.

Readings and prayers asking God for peace will be interspersed with music performed by the Cathedral Choir and accompanying musicians. A new piece written for the occasion by choir member Dr. David Asplin, “Letter to the World” for trumpet and organ, will be premiered.

One Peace, Many Paths

Sunday’s interfaith service is just one of the events being presented as part of this year’s One Peace, Many Paths.

They begin today with an “Adventures in Peacemaking” mini-camp for ages 5 to 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Unity Church of Truth, 2900 S. Bernard St.

The day includes activities, games, crafts, music of peace and teachings on compassionate communication. Admission is by donation.

Geshe Phelgye, former member of the Tibetan Parliament in Exile and Gonzaga University Global Scholar in Residence, will discuss Buddhist teachings on peaceful living Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Unitarian Universalist Church, 4340 Fort George Wright Drive.

Joy Gruenewald will present a Crystal Bowl Ceremony at Unity Church of Truth on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Admission is by donation.

A “Sounds of Peace” program featuring music, poetry, drama, indigenous sounds and video will be presented next Saturday at 7 p.m. at Unity Center of North Spokane, 4123 E. Lincoln Road. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for ages 17 and under, $20 for families; child care for children 6 and under is available if requested by today.

Buddhist speaker

The Spokane Buddhist Temple, 927 S. Perry St., will feature the Rev. Kiyonobu Kuwahara on Sunday during its 10:30 a.m. service.

Kuwahara, coordinator for the Jodo Shinshu Correspondence Courses and International Ministerial Orientation Program of Buddhist Churches of America, will present the Dharma talk.

Flea market

Covenant United Methodist Church, 15515 N. Gleneden Drive, will host a community market today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Items for sale include crafts and new items at bargain prices from more than 40 vendors.

Rally Day and fellowship

Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 2733 W. Northwest Blvd., will hold a Rally Day and TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More) Ministry Fair on Sunday after its 9 a.m. worship service.

The fair will have information about the church’s ministries and will include fellowship. The children of the church will kick off the school year with activities and treats.

Caring for Kids luncheon

Catholic Charities Foundation and the Morning Star Foundation will present the 15th annual Caring for Kids luncheon Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the Doubletree Hotel, 322 N. Spokane Falls Court.

The event will benefit St. Anne’s Children & Family Center and the Morning Star Boys Ranch.

Marilee Roloff, president and CEO of Volunteers of America, will be the guest speaker. The event will be hosted by Stephanie Vigil and Dan Kleckner from KHQ-TV.

Men’s retreat

Immaculate Heart Retreat Center, 6910 S. Ben Burr Road, will present a weekend healing retreat for men, “Be Healed in the Name of Jesus,” from Friday through Sept. 18. The Rev. Daniel Wetzler will lead the retreat. The cost is $185 for overnight accommodations, or $100 for commuters, including meals.
