Newport advances to State 1A soccer semifinals
Ryen Nicholas scored off an assist from Taylor Lewis in double overtime, giving the Newport girls a 2-1 win over Overlake in the quarterfinals of the State 1A tournament Saturday at Newport.
The Grizzlies will advance to play Cashmere Friday at Shoreline Stadium in Seattle. Cashmere beat La Salle in another quarterfinal match Saturday.
McKenzie Krogh opened the scoring for the Grizzlies with a goal in the 20th minute. Overlake’s Kerri Smith answered with a goal in the 62nd minute that sent the match into two overtime periods.
Newport is 19-2 on the season, with eight consecutive wins. The Grizzlies haven’t lost since a 2-1 defeat at Colville on Oct. 6.
Tahoma 2, Central Valley 1 (OT): At Maple Valley, Tahoma scored 45 seconds into the overtime period, eliminating the visiting Bears from the State 4A tournament.
Laci Rennecker scored CV’s lone goal in the second half. With the score tied at 1 in the 75th minute, the Bears were called for offsides on a promising goal-scoring attempt.
CV finished the season 13-5.
Boys soccer
Karl Muelheims scored two goals to power St. George’s (14-2-2) past Grace Academy 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the State 2B/1B tournament at Gonzaga Prep High School.
Muelheims opened the scoring with a goal in the fifth minute and capped the scoring in the 52nd minute.
The Dragons advance to play Waitsburg-Prescott in the quarterfinals Friday in Sumner. Waitsburg-Prescott beat Moses Lake Christian.
