In brief: Gonzales, Carpenter lead way for Zags on WCC team

Baseball: Freshman Marco Gonzales (pictured) and junior Ryan Carpenter were among seven Gonzaga University baseball players to receive the West Coast Conference’s individual and team awards Wednesday.

Gonzales was given a program-record four postseason honors: Co-Player of the Year and Co-Freshman of the Year (sharing both honors with San Diego’s Kris Bryant), All-WCC and All-Freshman.

Carpenter, also All-WCC, was chosen Pitcher of the Year. Seniors Tyler Chism, Cameron Edman and Cody Martin were also All-WCC selections. Junior Eric Lane and senior Mark Phillips received honorable mention. 

Gonzales started 46 games, 15 as pitcher. He went 11-2 overall, 6-0 in the WCC. Gonzales also started 29 games at first base and two at left field. He hit .291 overall, .315 in conference.

Carpenter posted an 8-2 overall record, 5-1 in conference. He struck out 107 batters, 58 in WCC play, tops in the conference.

Martin was 2-1 and had 12 saves along with a 0.86 ERA overall, best in the nation.

Edman, a catcher, led GU with a .346 average and doubles (23). He led the WCC with nine home runs.

Chism started all 52 games at right field and hits .313 overall, .378 in the WCC.

Assistant leaves EWU program

Women’s basketball: Cheryl Sorenson, an assistant basketball coach at Eastern Washington, has left the Eagles to take a similar position at Portland.

Sorenson, who was at EWU for four seasons, including the Eagles’ first Big Sky Conference regular-season championship, is a native of Milwaukie, Ore., and graduated from Clackamas HS before playing at Washington. She was on the Huskies team that reached the 2001 NCAA Regional Final in Spokane.
