Gay marriage good news
There is no sense responding to Patrick Kirlin’s assumed authority regarding the definition of marriage (Dec. 8). If the legal interpretation of marriage is meaningless to him, there is little I or anyone could say to persuade him otherwise. Rather, I’d like to address his argument that the Nov. 15 article and photo in The Spokesman-Review about gay marriage activists “is a terrible example” that “adults set for children.”
Like any newspaper, ours is responsible for printing news, particularly if it relates to our community. Whether we like what we read is immaterial; we go to the paper to find out what is happening around us. Since the Nov. 15 article described a potential change in state legislation that could affect people throughout Washington, it was the newspaper’s right and duty to publish it.
To shelter children from what is happening in our communities is not only futile, it is also dishonest. I’d like to introduce Kirlin to the many children I have the privilege of knowing, so that he can glean some of their contagious capacity for wrestling with tough questions.
Who knows? Perhaps their ability to embrace difference might rub off on him as well.
