Watson carries Vikings past CV in fourth quarter
Deon Watson scored 14 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter Thursday night, including a 3-pointer during the final minute, as Coeur d’Alene held off visiting Central Valley 54-48 in a nonleague boys basketball opener for both.
The Vikings won despite the absence of Chad Chalich, who is recovering from a broken foot after quarterbacking CdA to its second consecutive 4A State title.
Gaven Deyarmin, who quarterbacked CV to the State 4A quarterfinals, led a balanced scoring attack.
Deer Park 63, Chewelah 56: Uconn Peone and Reese Ferguson combined for 36 points and 19 rebounds and the host Stags jumped to a 19-1 lead and held off the Cougars in an opener for both. Tyler Monasmith hit four of Chewelah’s 10 3-pointers.
Colville 62, Priest River 54: Matt Hubbard scored 12 of his 20 points during a 28-19 first half and the visiting Indians held off the Spartans in an opener for both.
Rosalia 70, Wellpinit 42: David Littleton and Craig Nelson combined for 38 points and Grant Gelhaus added 14 points and eight rebounds as the host Spartans beat the Redskins in an opener for both. Rosalia shot 7 of 15 on 3-pointers and had nine less turnovers than Wellpinit.
Northport 63, Curlew 41: Jeremiah Johnson and Dylan Masters combined for 27 points, 15 rebounds and 10 steals as the visiting Mustangs took advantage of 32 turnovers to defeat the Cougars in a season opener for both. Northport’s Josh Konkler had six assists.
Kettle Falls 33, Selkirk 32: Logan Cook hit 1 of 2 free throws with 6 seconds left to help the host Bulldogs (1-0) hold off the Rangers (0-2) when Shawn Mailly hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Luke Beardslee and Conner McKern combined for 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs, whose lone win last year came against Selkirk.
Northwest Christian 75, Riverside 52: Kwinn Hanson and Dakota Winward combined for 43 points as the visiting Crusaders (1-0) defeated the Rams (1-1).
Girls basketball
Brittany Tackett, Erin Legel and Kyeli Parker combined for 35 points as Coeur d’Alene (4-1), Idaho’s top-ranked 5A team, opened play at the Nike Northwest Invitational in Beaverton, Ore., with a 61-26 win over the Wilsonville (Ore.) Wildcats.
Nonleague
Colville 57, Priest River 50 (OT): Ashley Knight had 16 points and 14 rebounds and McKenna Cabbage had four of her nine points in overtime as the Indians (1-0) defeated the host Spartans (3-2). Tyra Brons hit a 3-pointer to help Colville erase a five-point deficit during the last minute of regulation. The Spartans had a turnover on an inbounds play with 4 seconds left. PR’s Jill Weimer scored eight of her 17 points in the fourth quarter and added 10 rebounds and four steals.
Lakeland 55, Timberlake 37: Kacie Derby had 13 points and 13 of her team’s 40 rebounds as the host Hawks (3-3) defeated the Tigers (1-2) at Rathdrum. Lakeland’s Cieana Close and Darby Murray combined for 24 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists.
Deer Park 61, Chewelah 32: Zoey Mohr scored eight of her 11 points during a 25-point second quarter as the host Stags defeated the Cougars in an opener for both. Mohr shot 5 of 6 from the floor and added 11 rebounds. DP’s Alison Ruygrok added 13 points and seven assists.
Rosalia 69, Wellpinit 32: Briann Maley totaled 27 points and nine rebounds and the host Spartans took advantage of 29 turnovers to beat the Redskins in an opener for both. Wellpinit’s Kyra Antone had 10 rebounds.
Northwest Christian 44, Riverside 25: Hannah Deitzen finished 13 of 16 from the line and the visiting Crusaders shot 25 of 34 from the line to open their season with a win over the Rams (1-1). Riverside’s Courtney Davis had 10 rebounds.
Curlew 55, Northport 35: Katie Wimpari scored 14 points to guide the visiting Cougars past the Mustangs in an opener for both.
Selkirk 50, Kettle Falls 31: Courtney Holter and Katie Couch combined for 32 points as the visiting Rangers (1-1) defeated the Bulldogs (0-1).
Kellogg 43, Wallace 30: Kelsey Carter led three players in double figures with 11 points as the host Wildcats (4-1) defeated the Miners (1-3).
