Fresh Sheet: Tartlet takes home top prize in lentil event
The recipe for a little appetizer tartlet was the winner of the 2010 National Lentil Festival’s Legendary Lentil Cook-Off in Pullman last month.
Tasters chose the Lovely Little Lentil Tartlets by Linda Rohr, of Darien, Conn. She won the $1,000 first prize from the USA Dry Pea and Lentil Council.
Second place was awarded to Ultimate Lentil Chili Dip submitted by Lisa Keys, of Middlebury, Conn., who will receive $500. The third place award went to Hearty Ham and Lentil Soup submitted by Susan Bickta, of Kutztown, Pa., who will receive $250.
There were 94 entries in this year’s national competition. Judges tasted the top 50 recipes and chose six standouts to be prepared for the Lentil Festival’s public tasting. The first 400 tasters in the park judged the recipes.
The preliminary winners also included Corn and Lentil Chowder from Sharman Schubert, of Seahurst, Wash.; Caribbean-Style Sloppy Lentil Sliders, from Shannon Kohn, of Simpsonville, S.C.; and Lentil, Applewood Smoked Bacon and Goat Cheese Salad submitted by Mary Speer, of Palm Beach, Fla. Each received $25.
The recipe booklet from the 2010 National Lentil Festival Legendary Lentil Cook-off is available at the Pullman Chamber of Commerce for $4; add $1.50 for postage if you would like it mailed. Or, visit www.lentilfest.com to order.
