Data highlight AIDS threat
Harry Crase thinks that public shame drives homosexuals to engage in anonymous, high-risk sexual activity in the bushes of our city parks (Letters Sept. 26). If that were true, you would expect to see lower rates of sexually transmitted diseases in “progressive,” accepting cities like San Francisco and Seattle, because so many monogamous gay couples would be out-and-proud.
In fact, the opposite is true. HIV/AIDS is now the third leading cause of death for men aged 25-54 years in San Francisco; and the number of people diagnosed with HIV are steadily increasing, according to the San Francisco Department of Public Health. Just last year, the Centers for Disease Control reported that gay and bisexual men have AIDS at a rate 50 times greater than other groups – especially in large metropolitan areas.
Debilitating illness, chronic disease, psychological problems and early death is the legacy of this tragically misguided activism. Blaming others and promoting the gay “agenda” above saving the lives of those whose interests Crase purports to represent is disingenuous.
