In brief: WAC wants Hawaii, spurned by N. Texas
College Football: North Texas has decided not to leave the Sun Belt Conference to join the Western Athletic Conference.
North Texas athletic director Rick Villarreal revealed the decision in an interview with the Denton (Texas) Record-Chronicle on Monday.
Messages left with Villarreal by the Associated Press on Monday night were not returned.
The WAC had been trying to lure North Texas while clinging onto hopes of keeping its longest-running member, Hawaii, from bolting to the Mountain West Conference.
WAC commissioner Karl Benson held a teleconference Monday in an effort to quash questions about the viability of the beleaguered conference that’s reeling from the departure of its top football programs. He said he spoke with North Texas on Monday about joining the WAC, but his main concern is keeping Hawaii.
Powerhouse Boise State is leaving next year while Fresno State, Nevada and Hawaii plan to leave in 2012.
Hawaii recently announced that it was close to leaving the WAC after 32 years and joining the Mountain West for football and possibly the Big West in other sports.
• Texas State fires Wright: Texas State has fired football coach Brad Wright after the Bobcats finished 4-7 and just 1-5 in the Southland Conference.
Athletic director Larry Teis announced the move.
Spurs outlast Magic for 11th straight win
NBA: Tony Parker had 24 points and 10 assists to help the San Antonio Spurs to their 11th straight win with a 106-97 victory over the visiting Orlando Magic.
Manu Ginobili had 25 points for the Spurs, who faced their stiffest test yet put prevailed late for an NBA-best record of 12-1. Dwight Howard had 26 points and 18 rebounds for the East-leading Magic, whose own winning streak ended at four.
• Haslem to have surgery: The Miami Heat said forward Udonis Haslem will have surgery today to repair a badly torn ligament in his left foot, an injury that came Saturday night against Memphis. He will be out indefinitely
Nadal rallies to beat Roddick at ATP finals
Miscellany: Rafael Nadal ripped forehands and smacked backhands all over the court, leaving Andy Roddick to watch and wonder as the top-ranked Spaniard rallied to win 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 at the ATP World Tour Finals in London.
Nadal, who will finish the year as the No. 1 player in the world for the second time in three years, completed a career Grand Slam this year by winning the U.S. Open.
• Sabres Niedermayer out two weeks: Buffalo Sabres forward Rob Niedermayer will miss at least two weeks after having minor surgery to repair a knee injury that’s nagged him since September.
Coach Lindy Ruff said after practice that the operation was performed earlier in the day to relieve a buildup of fluid. Ruff said Niedermayer had been attempting to play through the injury since first feeling discomfort during the NHL preseason.
• Richard Petty Motorsports to field two cars in 2011: Richard Petty finished financially restructuring his race team and will field two fewer cars in the 2011 season.
The seven-time NASCAR champion said that Richard Petty Motorsports will go from four cars to two next year. RPM will field Fords for AJ Allmendinger and Marcos Ambrose.
