Paul, Okafor help Hornets upset Heat

NBA: Emeka Okafor had 26 points and 13 rebounds, and Chis Paul had 13 points and 19 assists, and the host New Orleans Hornets remained unbeaten with a 96-93 victory over the Miami Heat on Friday night.

David West added 15 points, including two crucial free throws after Chris Bosh’s 3 pulled Miami to 94-93.

Miami’s Dwyane Wade led all scorers with 28 points.

• Wild end to regulation helps Suns beat Grizzlies: Jason Richardson scored five of his 38 points in an amazing final 1.1 seconds of regulation and the Phoenix Suns went on to a head-shaking 123-118 double-overtime victory over the visiting Memphis Grizzlies.

Steve Nash scored 13 of his 25 points in the overtimes to send Memphis to its third loss in a row.

• Celtics survive Bulls’ comeback, win in OT: Ray Allen scored 25 points, including a key 3-pointer in overtime, and the Boston Celtics held on to beat the visiting Chicago Bulls 110-105.

Kevin Garnett scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Celtics. Joakim Noah led all scorers with 26 points for Chicago.

Crawford leads Hawks past Timberwolves: Jamal Crawford scored a season-high 22 points for the Atlanta Hawks (6-0) in a 113-103 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves in Minneapolis.

Corey Brewer scored a season-high 18 points for the Timberwolves.

Unrivaled Belle wins Ladies’ Classic race

Breeders’ Cup: Unrivaled Belle held off favored Blind Luck to win the $2 million Ladies’ Classic in the opening-day finale of the Breeders’ Cup at Lexington, Ky.

Ridden by Kent Desormeaux, Unrivaled Belle ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.04 under the lights night at Churchill Downs.

In other action, Shared Account survived a photo finish to win the $2 million Filly & Mare Turf; Awesome Feather outlasted R Heat Lightning in a two-horse race to the finish line in the $2 million Juvenile Fillies; Dubai Majesty won the $1 million Filly & Mare over Switch; and More Than Real won the $1 million Juvenile Fillies Turf, giving celebrity chef and owner Bobby Flay his first Breeders’ Cup victory.

Havlat’s goal helps Wild hold off Flames

NHL: Martin Havlat scored his first goal of the season to break a third-period tie, and Niklas Backstrom made 33 saves in the Minnesota Wild’s 2-1 victory over the Calgary Flames in St. Paul, Minn.

Rene Bourque scored a first-period goal and Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 21 shots for Calgary. The Flames have lost four games in a row.

• Pouliot scores twice, Canadiens beat Sabres: Benoit Pouliot scored twice, and Jeff Halpern had a goal and two assists in the Montreal Canadiens’ 3-2 victory over the slumping Buffalo Sabres in Buffalo, N.Y.

Carey Price made 29 saves to help the Canadiens improve to 8-4-1 and snap a two-game losing streak.

Miscellany: Auburn has had “no contact whatsoever” with Kenny Rogers, a man who allegedly tried to secure payment from Mississippi State during the recruitment of Tigers quarterback and Heisman Trophy hopeful Cam Newton, according to a person familiar with the situation.

Newton also said he has done nothing wrong. The NCAA is reviewing the recruitment of Newton, but Auburn said it has not yet received a letter of inquiry.

Mexico upsets U.S. women to reach 2011 WC: Mexico beat the United States at Cancun, Mexico, in one of the biggest upsets in the history of women’s soccer, a 2-1 victory on goals by Maribel Dominguez and Veronica Perez that qualified the Mexicans for next year’s World Cup.

Carli Lloyd scored for the United States, which is danger of missing the Women’s World Cup for the first time.

Sadler wins Sprint Cup pole: Elliott Sadler won the Sprint Cup pole for Sunday’s NASCAR race with a dominant run in Fort Worth, Texas. Sadler zipped around the high-banked 11/2-mile track in 195.397 mph, nearly 2 mph better than front-row partner Greg Biffle.

Points leader Jimmie Johnson qualified 17th. Denny Hamlin, second in the Chase standings, qualified 30th and Kevin Harvick. Harvick will start 26th.

Kyle Busch wins again in Trucks series: Kyle Busch moved closer to an owner’s championship in the NASCAR Camping World Trucks Series when he drove his No. 18 Toyota to a victory at Fort Worth, Texas.

Johnny Sauter was second, followed by Matt Crafton, Todd Bodine and Elliott Sadler.

Molinari still leads, Tiger falters at HSBC

Golf: Francesco Molinari built an early lead and then hung on for a 2-under 70 to maintain his one-shot lead over world No. 1 Lee Westwood heading into the weekend at the HSBC Champions at Shanghai.

Molinari was at 9-under 135. Ernie Els shot a 65 that left him two shots behind. Tiger Woods (72) finished five shots back.

Shin, Baba share Mizuno Classic lead: South Korea’s Jiyai Shin shot a 7-under 65 to share the lead with Japan’s Yukari Baba after the first round of the Mizuno Classic at Shima, Japan.

American Morgan Pressel was a stroke back at 6 under. Wendy Ward (Edwall, Wash.) opened with a 2-over 74.

Cook leads Charles Schwab Cup Championship: Defending champion John Cook shot a 2-under 69 to take a one-stroke lead over Tom Kite (67) and Tom Lehman (68) in the Champions Tour’s season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship at San Francisco.

Cook finished at 9-under 133. Mark O’Meara (65), Russ Cochran (68) and Fred Funk (70) were all at 7 under.
