Area roundup: Zags finish 13th in golf tourney
Stephanie Corey led Gonzaga with a final-day score of 6-over-par 76, finishing the tournament with a 230, as the Bulldogs jumped a spot in the team standings to finish in 13th place at the Challenge at Onion Creek women’s golf tournament Tuesday in Austin, Texas.
Corey tied with teammate Victoria Fallgren for the top score for GU, which finished its fall season with a score of 927 over the three-day tournament.
Iowa State took the team title with a score of 884. Megan Vaughn of Arkansas-Little Rock and Denver’s Tonje Daffinrud tied for medalist honors with scores of 4-over 214 at the 5,944-yard, par-70 Onion Creek Course.
Men’s basketball
Michael Hale led all scorers with 32 points on 10-of-13 shooting and Nick Fromm added 20 points and seven rebounds as North Idaho (1-0) led Salish (0-1) by as many as 37 points in winning its season opener 124-89 in Coeur d’Alene.
Women’s soccer
Five Eastern Washington Eagles were given Big Sky Conference postseason honors as seniors Brittany Sparks and Lyndsey Martin were named All-BSC second-teamers and Whitney Brannan, Dashia Huff and Lauren Jacobsen were named honorable mention.
Athletes of the week
Whitworth junior Dion Coxe was named Northwest Conference defensive men’s soccer player of the week for his effort in a pair of Pirates wins last week. Sarah Berentson of the women’s team was named offensive player of the week with three goals and an assist in two wins.
• Idaho’s Shana Lim was named WAC swimmer of the week finishing in first place in the 100-yard backstroke and second in the 50-yard freestyle in a double-dual meet against UCLA and San Diego.
