Died Mississippi State defensive end Nick Bell died Tuesday at the University of Alabama-Birmingham Hospital in Starksville, Miss., after a short battle with cancer. Bell, a 20-year-old from Bessemer, Ala., was diagnosed in late September after experiencing headaches during football practice and had surgery on Oct. 1 to remove a mass from his brain. He had emergency surgery on Monday morning after it was found that the cancer had aggressively spread throughout his body.

• Former three-time world surfing champion Andy Irons died. Phil Irons, the father of the 32-year-old surfer, confirmed his son’s death Tuesday. The cause of death was not immediately known. The younger Irons was found dead in a hotel room in Dallas, where he was on a layover en route to his home in Kauai, Hawaii.

Expected New England Revolution forward Taylor Twellman is expected to announce that concussion issues are forcing him to retire from soccer.

Arrested Authorities say former major league baseball player Elijah Dukes has been jailed in Tampa, Fla., on charges related to allegedly failing to pay child support. Suspended Minnesota defensive tackle Brandon Kirksey has been suspended for the game against Michigan State on Saturday. Interim coach Jeff Horton did not say why Kirksey was suspended. Horton also suspended defensive back Michael Carter and defensive lineman Ra’Shede Hageman for academic issues.

Accused American cyclist Floyd Landis and his coach Arnie Baker will stand trial in Paris in a hacking case that targeted a French doping lab, judicial officials said. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because the proceedings are supposed to remain secret. The officials said Judge Thomas Cassutomade the decision Oct. 15. No trial date has been set.
