Time for an oil change

The Spokesman-Review

What happened to the “drill, baby, drill” chant from Republicans during their 2008 national convention? Perhaps they didn’t understand the risky technology required to drill in water 5,000 feet deep. They should be chanting, “cleanup, baby, cleanup” as oil continues to spill into the Gulf.

Our Republican congresswoman has conducted hearings to limit NEPA requirements related to oil and gas exploration. She thinks the government has gone too far in limiting corporations that want to exploit our environment to make profits.

That leaves taxpayers to fund the cost of cleanup and restoring the environment after corporations have wrecked it. I want you to think of Cathy McMorris Rodgers when BP passes on its spill cleanup costs to the price of gasoline at the pump. Think of Cathy opposing environmental impact statements when a company like BP wants to spill chemicals into our drinking water and pollute the air we breathe.

We have been painted into the corner by politicians like McMorris Rodgers. We now have to choose between eating shrimp and fish or having gasoline for our cars at any cost. Gasoline has now become more important to us than our health and environment. Please, no more “drill, baby, drill.”
