Nation in brief: Activists plead in Landrieu case
New Orleans – Four conservative activists accused of trying to tamper with the phones in Sen. Mary Landrieu’s office pleaded guilty Wednesday to misdemeanor charges of entering federal property under false pretenses.
James O’Keefe, 25, famous for wearing a pimp costume in a video that embarrassed the ACORN, was sentenced to three years probation, 100 hours of community service and a $1,500 fine.
O’Keefe has said the group was trying to investigate complaints that constituents calling Landrieu’s office couldn’t get through to criticize the Democrat’s support of a health care reform bill.
O’Keefe told the judge he regretted his actions and apologized for raising security concerns at the federal building. After the hearing, he said he would continue his undercover work.
Magistrate Daniel Knowles III sentenced the three other suspects to two years probation, 75 hours of community service and $1,500 fines.
Elderly man kills intruder
Chicago – Last November, someone broke into the home of an 80-year-old Army veteran in Chicago and made off with $100 in cash.
The man vowed never again to be a victim of crime – and bought a gun.
Early Wednesday morning, he used it to kill a burglar who tried to break into the home as he and his 83-year-old wife and their 12-year-old great-grandson slept about 5:20 a.m., according to police and family.
“He just protected his family,” the veteran’s son said. “That’s the most important thing to do, protect your family.”
