In brief: St. Al’s students help shelter
EAST CENTRAL – First-grade students at St. Aloysius Catholic School recently lifted the spirits of 20 mothers and children living at St. Margaret’s Shelter, 101 E. Hartson Ave., by approaching area Supercuts Hair Salons, owned by Regina Lillie, to provide free haircuts.
Supercuts has committed to coming back to the shelter three times a year, according to a press release.
Healthy food will be topic
WEST CENTRAL – The West Central Community Center, 1603 N. Belt St., will host a focus group next Thursday for residents of the neighborhood.
The goal of the meeting is to assess the community’s access to healthy food. Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy a free dinner and will receive a $25 grocery card. Grocery cards are limited to the first 15 people who sign up.

Basset Blast will be Saturday
SPOKANE VALLEY – The Washington Basset Rescue will hold the 12th annual Basset Blast on Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sullivan Park, 1901 N. Sullivan Road.
The event will include contests for the dogs, raffles and a silent auction with items such as an Apple iPod, a Kodak digital camera and wine.
Cost is $10 per hound, if registered before Saturday, or $15 on the day of the event.
All proceeds will benefit the state basset rescue program.
