Casto’s assault charges dropped

Men’s basketball: The Whitman County prosecutor’s office has dropped fourth-degree assault charges against Washington State University starting center DeAngelo Casto.

Casto (pictured above) was arrested in late March following a fight on NE B St. after an unidentified man alleged Casto had punched him. The charges were dismissed earlier this month after a compromise was reached and agreed to by all parties, according to a spokesperson in the prosecutor’s office Wednesday.

The 6-foot-8 Casto averaged 10.7 points and a team-high 7.0 rebounds last season as a sophomore.

Big Sky drops scheduling trial

College basketball: The Big Sky Conference is dropping its experiment with back-to-back basketball scheduling and lifting its limit on the size of travel parties for bus trips.

University presidents voted to make the changes at the league’s spring meetings in Salt Lake City on Tuesday.

Big Sky spokesman Jon Kasper said the conference is returning to a men’s and women’s basketball scheduling format in which nine weeks will feature games on Thursdays and Saturdays, while there will also be three Monday games.

He said it was an issue of equity. Because of traveling distances, some teams didn’t play any back-to-back road games.

Signing hurts Seahawks’ Teel

Football:

The Seahawks announced the signing J.P. Losman, and as expected, the addition of the one-time starting quarterback was bad news for Mike Teel, Seattle’s No. 3 quarterback last season.

On the same day the Seahawks added Losman to their roster, they parted ways with Teel, waiving the 2009 seventh-round pick.

Losman is not a realistic threat to starter Matt Hasselbeck, or even backup Charlie Whitehurst, but he seems a better fit for Seattle’s new offensive scheme than Teel.
