What’s in a name?

The Spokesman-Review

The recent letter criticizing Lewis and Clark High School’s theater for putting on the musical “Urinetown” caused me to wonder if the writer had actually seen the play. In spite of the title, “Urinetown” is rather a sweet little musical that celebrates the values most of us hold to.

Having taught theater in the public school system for 22 years, I definitely believe high school theater should offer positive messages and project high values. I don’t think this play violates that philosophy. It is no more racy than “Oklahoma” or “Fiddler on the Roof.”

In fact, with big business being the bad guys, the only ones “Urinetown” might offend are fervent Republicans.
