Everett walks its way past Indians

Spokane can’t capitalize on Skole, Hoying heroics

EVERETT, Wash. – What’s the baseball adage? Walks will kill you?

At least figuratively, they were fatal to the Spokane Indians on Friday night at Everett Memorial Stadium in a 6-5 Northwest League loss to the AquaSox.

Three walks in the first inning and two more in the eighth were instrumental as the AquaSox avenged a 5-3 loss to the Indians in 15 innings Thursday night in the opener of a five-game series.

With two out in the bottom of the first, Spokane pitcher Miguel De Los Santos walked three straight batters and hit a fourth to stake Everett to a 2-0 lead. That’s more earned runs than he had given up in 12 innings in two starts.

But the Indians overcame that first-inning deficit.

Jacob Skole’s two-out, two-run single in the third for his first RBIs of the season highlighted a three-run third, and Jared Hoying’s first home run of the year in the fifth made it 4-2.

After that rocky start, De Los Santos settled down, retiring the last 13 batters he faced before leaving after five innings.

Everett got a run back against Francisco Mendoza in the sixth and won it against Brett Weibley (0-1) in the eighth. Two walks preceded a three-run homer by pinch-hitter Evan Shapley.

The Indians parlayed a double by Kevin Torres, a single by Ryan Strausborger and a double play into a run in the ninth, but left the tying run on second base.
