In brief: Clutch Collins carries Kansas over K-State

Men’s College Basketball: Sherron Collins bounced back from a back injury to score on a hard drive with nine seconds left in overtime, helping No. 2 Kansas pull out a gritty 81-79 win over No. 11 Kansas State on Saturday night at Manhattan, Kan.

Kansas dismantled Missouri on Monday and closed out the rivalry week sweep by winning an epic back-and-forth battle with Kansas State.

Collins hit the floor with 2:44 left in overtime and went to the bench holding his back, then returned just in time to score on a baseline drive. He missed the free throw, but Cole Aldrich grabbed the rebound and Brady Morningstar hit two free throws to close out the Jayhawks’ 26th win in their last 27 games in Manhattan.

Aldrich had 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Collins finished with 16 points.

Georgetown handles Duke: With President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden seated in the front row, the No. 7 Hoyas literally stole the game from No. 8 Duke, forcing five turnovers in a two-minute, first-half spurt on the way to an 89-77 victory at Washington.

Chris Wright scored 21 points on 8-for-9 shooting and making two defensive plays that helped ignite an 18-3 run that gave the Hoyas the lead for good in the 200th career win for coach John Thompson III.

Coleman scores 37 as Houston beats Herd: The NCAA’s top scorer, Aubrey Coleman, gave his best showing of the season, scoring 37 points and pulling down 13 rebounds to lead Houston to an 81-66 win over Marshall at Houston.

It was the third straight game in which Coleman, who entered the day averaging an NCAA-best 25.6 points per game, scored 30 or more for the Cougars. It was also his highest scoring and rebounding game this season.

Miller nets 52 in Trail Blazers’ OT win

NBA: Andre Miller scored a career-high 52 points, including 25 in the fourth quarter and overtime, and Juwan Howard hit a jumper with 44.8 seconds left to lift the Portland Trail Blazers past the Dallas Mavericks 114-112 at Dallas.

Portland scored the final six points, including Miller’s layup that tied the game at 112. On the Blazers’ next possession, Howard connected on a 15-foot jumper that gave Portland a 114-112 lead.

Magic handle Hawks behind Howard: Dwight Howard had 31 points and 19 rebounds and the Orlando Magic coasted to a 104-86 victory over the Atlanta Hawks at Orlando, Fla.

Hornets, minus Paul, beat Grizzlies in OT: Emeka Okafor had 21 points, Darren Collison added 17 points and a career-high 18 assists and the New Orleans Hornets, without star guard Chris Paul, defeated Memphis 109-102 in overtime at Memphis, Tenn.

Bucks beat short-handed Heat: Hakim Warrick scored 10 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter and the Milwaukee Bucks held off the short-handed Miami Heat for a 95-84 win at Milwaukee.

Andrew Bogut and Brandon Jennings each had 17 points for Milwaukee.

The Heat were without forward Michael Beasley, their second-leading scorer, and guard Mario Chalmers.

Barlow’s late 3 gives Irish narrow victory

Women’s College Basketball: Ashley Barlow swished a 3-pointer with 34.2 seconds left, and No. 3 Notre Dame held off Syracuse 74-73 at Syracuse, N.Y.

After the Irish’s Lindsay Schrader missed the front end of a 1-and-1, a held ball gave Syracuse a final possession with less than a second left. Tasha Harris’ inbounds pass to Kayla Alexander in the lane was deflected away and the Irish escaped with a win.

Sutter, Cullen lift Canes past Hawks

NHL: Brandon Sutter and Matt Cullen scored in a 26-second span in the third period, and Cam Ward made 39 saves to help the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-2 at Raleigh, N.C.

Sergei Samsonov and Jussi Jokinen also scored for the Hurricanes.

Senators win ninth straight, top Canadiens: Mike Fisher scored 3:33 into overtime and the Ottawa Senators extended their winning streak to a team-record nine in a row with a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens at Ottawa.

Fisher took a pass from defenseman Erik Karlsson and cut across the goalmouth to put a backhand past Jaroslav Halak for the winner.

Doan scores again; Coyotes hold off Rangers: Shane Doan scored in his third straight game and the Phoenix Coyotes withstood a late rally to beat the reeling New York Rangers 3-2 at Glendale, Ariz.

Marian Gaborik, who scored earlier in the third, came within inches of tying the game with 1:26 left, bouncing a short-handed attempt off the right post after a scramble in front.

New York has lost five in a row.

Sylvester stops Lyell for middleweight title

Boxing: Sebastian Sylvester of Germany stopped Billy Lyell in the 10th round to retain his middleweight title at Neubrandenburg, Germany.

Lyell’s corner threw in the towel after Sylvester (33-3, 16 KOs) landed a hard right to the American’s chin and followed through with more shots to Lyell’s head and body.

Lyell (21-8) was a late replacement for Pablo Navascues, who was suspended for failing a drug test.

Montoya, Ganassi lead early at 24 Hours

Miscellany: Chip Ganassi Racing was on its way to reclaiming the 24 Hours of Daytona title, with Juan Pablo Montoya leading more than seven hours into the sports car endurance race at Daytona Beach, Fla.

Montoya’s teammates and fellow Indianapolis 500 champions Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon held the lead for a combined 123 laps through seven hours.

Hirscher wins World Cup giant slalom: Marcel Hirscher of Austria won a World Cup giant slalom ski race at Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, while American Ted Ligety finished third.

Hirscher earned his second win of the season with a flawless second run on the Podkoren 3 course to finish in a combined time of 2 minutes, 31.30 seconds.

The event will end with a slalom today, the final race ahead of the Olympics.

Bold Chieftain, Baze win Sunshine Millions: Bold Chieftain and jockey Russell Bazecompleted a wild rally and beat Palladio by a neck as heavy favorite The Usual Q.T. faded to last in the $500,000 Sunshine Millions Classic at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif.

The win was one of only two for California horses as Florida continued its eight years of dominance in the six-race competition between horses bred in the two states.
