Sports in brief: Wisconsin hands Purdue first defeat

Men’s basketball: Jordan Taylor scored a career-high 23 points, Jason Bohannon tied a career high with 20, and the No. 17 Wisconsin Badgers (13-3, 3-1 Big Ten) beat No. 4 Purdue 73-66 in Madison, Wis., and handed Boilermakers (14-1, 2-1) their first loss of the season.

Purdue’s 14-0 start tied the school’s best, but both the 1993-94 squad and this year’s had their streaks end in Madison.

•Fifth-ranked Duke falls: Gani Lawal scored 21 points, including a crucial shot with just more than a minute left and the No. 20 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (12-3, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) pulled off a 71-67 upset of the fifth-ranked Duke Blue Devils (13-2, 1-1) in Atlanta.

•Notre Dame upsets No. 8 West Virginia: Da’Sean Butler’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer rolled around the rim and fell out and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (14-3, 3-1 Big East), who led by 20 at the half, held on for a 70-68 victory over the No. 8 West Virginia Mountaineers (12-2, 3-1) in South Bend, Ind.

Luke Harangody led Notre Dame with 24 points.

•Georgetown edges UConn: Austin Freeman scored 28 of his career-high 33 points in the second half, helping the No. 12 Georgetown Hoyas (12-2, 3-1 Big East) erase a 15-point halftime deficit and beat the No. 13 Connecticut Huskies (11-4, 2-2) in Washington, 72-69.

•No. 11 Kansas State stumbles: Marcus Denmon scored nine of his 14 points in the final six minutes and Zaire Taylor hit a big 3-pointer late, lifting the Missouri Tigers (13-3) to a 74-68 win over the No. 11 Kansas State Wildcats (13-2) in Columbia, Mo., in the Big 12 opener for both teams.

•No. 14 Mississippi beaten: Dee Bost tied his career high with 25 points – 17 coming in the second half – and the Mississippi State Bulldogs (13-3) posted an 80-75 upset win over the visiting Mississippi Rebels (12-3) in a Southeastern Conference opener for both teams at Oxford, Miss.

•UNLV whips No. 15 New Mexico: Kendall Wallace made six of his seven 3-pointers in the second half and finished with a career-high 21 points, leading the UNLV Rebels (13-3, 1-1 Mountain West) to a 74-62 win over 15th-ranked New Mexico (14-3, 0-2) in Albuquerque, N.M.

Cowgirls stop Baylor’s streak

Women’s basketball: Andrea Riley scored 43 points and the No. 23 Oklahoma State Cowgirls (13-2) snapped the 13-game winning streak of the No. 5 Baylor Bears (13-2), 78-65 in the Big 12 opener for both teams in Stillwater, Okla.

•Top-ranked UConn crushes No. 7 North Carolina: Tina Charles scored all of her 25 points in the first half and grabbed 13 rebounds to help top-ranked Connecticut (15-0) rout No. 7 North Carolina (13-2) 88-47 in Storrs, Conn., and run its winning streak to 54.

Thunder win behind Durant’s big night

NBA: Kevin Durant matched his season high with 40 points, and the Oklahoma City Thunder won for the seventh time in nine games, beating the Indiana Pacers 108-102 in Oklahoma City.

•Jazz lasso Mavericks: Deron Williams had 20 points and nine assists, Carlos Boozer added 15 points, and the Utah Jazz beat the Dallas Mavericks 111-93 in Dallas.

•Magic snap skid: J.J. Redick scored 17 points in place of an injured Vince Carter, and the Orlando Magic ended a four-game losing streak with a 113-81 victory over the Atlanta Hawks at Orlando, Fla.

Avalanche win after marathon shootout

NHL: Matt Hendricks scored the deciding goal in the 11th round of the shootout, rookie Matt Duchene scored twice in regulation, and the Colorado Avalanche snapped Buffalo’s six-game winning streak with a 4-3 victory over the Sabres in Buffalo, N.Y.

•Canadiens win in OT: Zach Parise scored New Jersey’s first overtime goal of the season and the visiting Devils beat the Montreal Canadiens 2-1.

•Suspended game resumes today: The NHL announced that the Tampa Bay Lightning and the New Jersey Devils will complete their suspended game in Newark, N.J., starting at 3 p.m. PST.

The game was suspended on Friday with 9:12 left in the second period because of a problem with the lights.

Rangers, Guerrero agree to 1-year deal

Miscellany: A person familiar with the negotiations tells the AP that slugger Vladimir Guerrero has agreed to a one-year deal with the Texas Rangers. Guerrero must pass a physical.

•Glover struggles to hold lead: Lucas Glover finally hit his stride when the wind shifted and finished with a birdie for a 2-under 71 that allowed him to stay in the lead at the SBS Golf Championship in Kapalua, Hawaii.

Glover lost his three-shot lead on the front nine with consecutive three-putts. Defending champion Geoff Ogilvy surged two shots ahead until losing some momentum on the back nine and settled for 5-under 68 – one shot behind.

•Davydenko beats Nadal: Nikolay Davydenko saved two match points before rallying to upset No. 2 Rafael Nadal 0-6, 7-6 (8), 6-4 in the final of tennis’ Qatar Open in Doha, Qatar.

•Clijsters tops Henin: Kim Clijsters hung on to win an all-Belgian final at the Brisbane International tennis event, beating Justine Henin 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (6) in Brisbane, Australia.

•World Cup race canceled: Thick fog forced the cancellation of a World Cup men’s giant slalom ski race in Adelboden, Switzerland, after 58 of 66 scheduled racers completed the first run.

World Cup rules state the entire field must complete the first run before a second leg can be rescheduled.
