Fined New York Jets coach Rex Ryan was fined $50,000 by the team for making an obscene gesture at a mixed martial arts event last weekend. The team’s decision came after a smiling Ryan was caught on a cell phone camera flipping his middle finger at a fan during the competition in Sunrise, Fla., on Saturday night.

Serving Washington guard Javaris Crittenton won’t contest his NBA suspension for bringing a gun into the Wizards’ locker room. Players’ association executive director Billy Hunter said in a statement that Crittenton “believes far more good will be done by moving forward and focusing on the future.”

Scheduled Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez will have surgery on his left knee and is expected to be ready in time for training camp. The team said that the operation, which will repair the patella ligament that holds the kneecap in place, will be performed by Jets physician Dr. Ken Montgomery and orthopedist Dr. Elliott Hershman in the next few weeks.

Filed The family of former Pittsburgh Steeler Dwight White is suing the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and three doctors in Pittsburgh, claiming negligence contributed to his death. The suit in Allegheny County Court says one of White’s doctors was out of town and another prescribed an over-the-counter medication when he weakened after being discharged from back surgery in May 2008.

Agreed Outfielder Reed Johnson has agreed to an $800,000, one-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Johnson spent the last two seasons with the Chicago Cubs after beginning his major league career with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2003.

Returning Former tennis star Ivan Lendl will play his first exhibition since he retired from the sport 16 years ago in a new Atlantic City event. Organizers announced that the first Caesars Tennis Classic will be played April 10 at Boardwalk Hall.

Died Former Oklahoma State NCAA wrestling champion Jack Brisco died at age 68. The university said that Brisco died on Monday in Stillwater, Okla., after suffering from heart disease.
