Campers focus on ‘Curious George’

Chase Davis is the Man in the Yellow Hat and Gus Koch portrays Curious George during Fernan Elementary’s recent Camp-Read-A-Lot in the school gym.

The students at Fernan Elementary School in the Coeur d’Alene School District recently took a camping trip at the school’s second annual Camp Read-A-Lot!

Campers had two special visitors at their campground, located in Fernan’s gym, when Curious George and The Man in the Yellow Hat stopped by to listen to one of George’s favorite stories, “Curious George Goes Camping,” read by fifth-grade teacher Teri Burch.

Students and their families enjoyed a dinner of pulled pork sandwiches and hot dogs, donated by Texas Roadhouse. Students later munched on s’mores. Fernan students were also given “Curious George” and other books before they headed home.

In an e-mail from Annette Davis of IDAHO READS! parents enjoyed the camping trip as much as their kids. Camp Read-A-Lot! was organized by volunteers including the Fernan Title One team, made up of teachers and aides Libbi Keyes, Cathy Rider, Julie Calix, Shavon Harris, Janet Smidt and Lobbi Granier. Coeur d’Alene High School Key Club members also volunteered for the event, including Holly Lind, Jaycee Rade, Jennifer Kiesewetter, Alyssa Baker, Jessica Rade, Audra Ross, Sydney Sales, Justin Smith, Kelsey Ingalls, Cassey Hauenga and Gus Koch.
