Suspended Free-agent guard Delonte West was suspended without pay for 10 games after pleading guilty last month to weapons charges. Maryland authorities said he was carrying two loaded handguns, a loaded shotgun and an 81/2-inch bowie knife while speeding on a three-wheel motorcycle on the Capital Beltway last September. West played for the Cleveland Cavaliers last season. The Minnesota Timberwolves waived him Aug. 3 after acquiring West in a trade.
Guilty A chastened Jayson Williams admitted he was driving drunk when he slammed his SUV into a tree, capping years of legal and personal problems with a guilty plea that adds more time behind bars for the already imprisoned former NBA star. His voice sometimes unsteady, Williams apologized to his family and said he was working to rebuild his life as he pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated in the Jan. 5 crash. His one-year sentence – the maximum for the misdemeanor offense – will follow the five-year prison term he’s serving in New Jersey for accidentally shooting and killing a limo driver.
Collapsed Former Alabama standout point guard Mikhail Torrance collapsed after a workout in Bradenton, Fla., and is hospitalized in critical condition, a person familiar with the situation told the Associated Press. Torrance had been training at the IMG Academies when he lost consciousness, according to the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the player’s family had not authorized the release of any information. Emergency medical personnel began working on Torrance within two minutes, and performed CPR as he was being taken to a hospital.
Died Football’s Johnny Bailey, a record-breaking running back in the small-college ranks and former NFL Pro Bowl kick returner, died from pancreatic cancer. He was 43. Texas A&M-Kingsville announced his death. Bailey played for the Division II school from 1986-89, when it was known as Texas A&I University, and became the second college player to run for more than 6,000 yards in a career.
Signed The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed former Philadelphia Flyers forward Arron Asham to a $700,000, one-year contract. Asham had 10 goals, 14 assists and 126 penalty minutes for Philadelphia last season.
