Blaze at school melts part of playground

A fire early Friday in the playground at Regal Elementary School at 2702 E. Rich Ave. destroyed a playground structure.

Spokane Fire Department crews quickly extinguished the blaze following a 1:48 a.m. call, but not before the plastic materials in the play structure had started to melt.

A plastic climbing wall, slides and connecting equipment were destroyed. The play structure was valued at $41,000, school officials said in a news release.
