Signed The Laredo (Texas) Broncos have signed former American League MVP Jose Canseco to a short-term contract. The independent minor league team said Saturday that Canseco will serve as bench coach and designated hitter during two Broncos homestands starting Monday. The United League series against the Rio Grande Valley White Wings is Monday-Wednesday. He’ll also be there Aug. 28-30 against the Coastal Bend Thunder.
Ailing Tennis player Andy Roddick finally knows what’s been getting him down the last few months – a mild case of mononucleosis. Roddick said that one of several blood tests came back positive for mononucleo- sis. Doctors told him he’s likely had it for a couple of months and should be nearly over it.

U.S. World Cup coach Bob Bradley is one of the leading candidates to replace Martin O’Neill at Aston Villa, and nobody’s laughing. Ken Griffey Jr., Don Mattingly and Dale Long share Major League Baseball’s mark by hitting home runs in eight straight games. J.K. Moon, an official with the Korea Baseball Organization, said the Lotte Giants infielder hit a three-run homer Saturday in a game against the Kia Tigers.
• Olympian David Boudia scored 605.40 points to set an American record and win the 10-meter title at the U.S. national diving championships in College Station, Texas. Boudia paired with Nick McCrory to win the men’s synchronized 10-meter title. Boudia became the first American diver to score more than 600 points in the six-dive format, bettering his own record of 551.20.
Quits Hong Kong pulled out of the women’s baseball World Cup in Caracas, Venezuela, a day after one of its players was wounded by a stray bullet during a game. Organizers also decided to move all remaining games to the central city of Maracay and away from the Fort Tiuna military base in Caracas where Cheuk Woon Yee was wounded.
