Spokane student wins $1,000 scholarship
Hannah Hornbaker, an 11-year-old student at Northwest Christian Schools in Spokane, was recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship through the Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship Program.
Hornbaker, a regional winner, was chosen from more than 27,000 nominees. She helped raise money for the American Cancer Society, shared her grandmother’s story of survival and met with state representatives to help pass laws supporting tobacco prevention and control.
According to a press release from Kohl’s, Hornbaker was chosen based on her initiative, creativity, leadership and generosity.
Julie Gardner, Kohl’s executive vice president and chief marketing officer, said, “These kids are doing remarkable work to benefit their local communities. We feel privileged to be in a position to help support the continued education of deserving kids across the country who are making a real difference in their community.”
The Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship Program is in its 10th year. This year, Kohl’s increased the total scholarship amounts to $10,000 for 10 national winners and donated $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each winner’s behalf. In total, Kohl’s recognized more than 2,100 awardees with more than $410,000 in scholarships and prizes.
