Spokane County in brief: Apply for Key Leader scholarships

SPOKANE COUNTY – Applications are being accepted for students interested in the Kiwanis Clubs of Spokane County Key Leader Conference, to be held at the Chewelah Peaks Learning Center Oct. 15-17.

Students will work in large and small group activities. The camp is staffed with trained adult volunteers, along with a trained facilitator.

Cost for the conference is $200. Scholarships will be awarded to pay for camp expenses, although students and parents are asked to pay 30 percent of the cost.

Applicants must be high school students, between the ages of 14 and 18. Submit by e-mail your address, telephone number, age, gender, year in school, the school you attend, and a brief statement on why you would like to receive the scholarship and attend the leadership training to Dean Crandell or Gary Jespersen.

Scholarships of $120 will be awarded at the conference.

Unity in the Community set for Aug. 21 in Riverfront Park

RIVERSIDE – The 16th annual Unity in the Community celebration will be held at Riverfront Park on Aug. 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. near the Clock Tower.

The region’s largest multicultural event invites the public to bring their kids to the park before noon to take part in K-8 school supply, giveaways, free kid’s bike helmets and fittings, and a petting zoo.

The family celebration will include cultural villages, an interactive children’s center, an education, career and health fair, art, and music and dancing on the main stage.
