Storm suffer back-to-back WNBA losses

Basketball: Scholanda Robinson scored 12 of her 21 points in the third quarter to lead the Tulsa Shock to a surprising 84-75 victory over the Seattle Storm on Tuesday night in Tulsa, Okla.

The league-worst Shock (5-22) snapped a seven-game losing streak and a nine-game skid at home, while the Storm (22-4), with the WNBA’s best record, dropped their second straight.

Sue Bird scored 19 points for Seattle. Lauren Jackson had 18, Tanisha Wright 15 and Swin Cash added 13.

• Eastern Conference race tightens up: Katie Smith had 18 points and the Washington Mystics came from behind to beat the Atlanta Dream 86-78 in Atlanta.

The victory moved the Mystics (16-10) into a second-place tie with Indiana and to within a game of first-place Atlanta (18-10) in the WNBA’s Eastern Conference.

• NBA releases some of 2010-11 schedule: The NBA will open its season with a battle of Big Threes.

The Heat will debut their All-Star trio of Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh at Boston on Oct. 26 against the defending Eastern Conference champion Celtics, who are led by their veteran group of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen.

The Los Angeles Lakers will host Houston in the other opening-night game on TNT.

The Christmas schedule will again feature five games, highlighted by the Miami Heat-Lakers matchup.

Boston will visit Orlando on Christmas for a rematch of the East finals. The remainder of that day’s schedule includes Chicago at New York, Denver at Oklahoma City, and Portland at Golden State. The full sched- ule will be released Aug. 10.

Sounders tie Metapan in CONCACAF play

Miscellany: Uruguay’s Alvaro Fernandez scored on a 10-yard header in the 74th minute to lift the Seattle Sounders to a 1-1 draw with Metapan in Salvador, El Salvador, to earn a place in the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League.

The MLS team won the first leg at home 1-0 and advanced from the qualifying stage on a 2-1 aggregate.

Seattle will play in Group C with Monterrey, Saprissa and either Tauro of Panama or Marathon of Honduras.

• Cuban, Ryan square off: Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban will go head-to-head with Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan in bidding for the Texas Rangers.

Cuban’s group, which includes Houston businessman Jim Crane, was the only bid submitted and approved by Tuesday night’s deadline.

The amount of the Cuban-Crane bid will be released at today’s auction. The bidding procedures require that it be at least $321.7 million.

Ryan and Pittsburgh sports attorney Chuck Greenberg are the bidders favored by Major League Baseball.
