Canning classes for couples
The Washington State University Pend Oreille County Extension Office and WSU Master Food Preservers are hosting “Canning for Couples” classes on Aug. 12 and Aug. 31.
The hands-on workshops will help participants safely can green beans, sauerkraut and homemade soup stocks.
Bonnie Wyrobeck will teach both classes.
On Aug. 12, she’ll cover ways to get out of the kitchen and into the yard, using a propane stove to safely can foods. Class topics also include pressure canners, gauge testing, taste testing and other concerns. Each person will take home a pint of green beans.
On Aug. 31, Wyrobeck will talk about vegetable soup broths made from garden odds and ends, easy homemade sauerkraut, pickles and jerky. There will be food to taste and class members will make their own soup and sauerkraut to take home. They should bring a 5-pound cabbage to cut up and their own vegetables for soup stock.
The classes are held at the Usk Community Center. They begin at 5:30 p.m. Registration is $5 per class.
Please call the extension office (509) 447-2401 or e-mail carlapogson@wsu.edu to register.
Individuals are also invited to participate.
