Prep roundup: Simon shuts down Panthers
Scott Simon threw one-hit ball for six innings and Coedy Cooley singled, doubled and homered to lift Central Valley (12-3) to a 7-0 win over visiting Mead (11-4) in Greater Spokane League baseball on Wednesday.
The teams entered the day tied for second place behind Mt. Spokane (15-1), which was idle.
Cooley had three runs batted in and two runs scored. Joe Arlt went 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Also in the GSL, Spencer Ansett took a no-hitter into the seventh, and Derek Peterson and Jason Leonard homered as Ferris (11-6) ran its winning streak to five by posting a 13-2 win at East Valley (3-12). … Dean Neilson and David McNeil had four RBIs apiece to lead host Lewis and Clark (10-5) to a 10-2 win over Shadle Park at Hart Field. Blake Phebus of the Highlanders (6-11) doubled twice and had two RBIs.
•Nick Pacheco had three runs and two RBIs in the opener and Mike Tripp went 2 for 3 with two runs in the second game as Medical Lake (9-5, 5-5 Great Northern League) posted an 8-6, 8-0 sweep at Deer Park (1-13, 0-10).
Softball
Tiffany Lucas scattered seven hits and Allie Riggin had two hits to help East Valley (5-9) to an 8-5 win at Shadle Park. Katelyn Harvey hit a three-run homer for the Highlanders (7-8) in the fourth inning. … McKenzie Shea doubled and homered to help Central Valley (6-8) to a 13-2 five-inning win at North Central (6-8). Sydney Salzman of the Bears added a 3-for-3 effort. … Alene Bethel pitched a five-hitter and Jordan Schmerer had a three-run double to guide University (13-2) to a 6-1 win at Ferris. Cassie Wendt went 2 for 2 for the Saxons (5-10).

Boys soccer
Lucas Schneidmiller headed in Jordan Badinger’s crossing pass early in the second half to give Central Valley (10-1, 8-1) a 1-0 win over visiting University (8-4, 6-3) in GSL play. The Bears remained tied for first place with Mead. … Spencer Button’s header goal off a corner kick at 52 minutes gave Mead (10-2, 8-1) breathing room during a 3-1 win over visiting Gonzaga Prep (7-4-1, 5-4). Derek Butz capped Mead’s scoring at 75 minutes after taking Gabe Arias’ through ball. … Alec Cutter scored every goal during Ferris’ 4-0 win at North Central (7-6-1, 4-6). Cutter scored at 5 minutes on a penalty kick. Shak Johnson, Matt LaPlante and Justin Louik of the third-place Saxons (8-5-1, 7-2) fed Cutter for the other scores. … Adam Talley’s second-effort goal at 67 minutes gave host East Valley (7-7, 5-4) a 1-0 win over Lewis and Clark (8-7, 5-5). Track and field
West Valley’s boys and Deer Park’s girls won twice during a three-way Great Northern League meet at WV that included Clarkston. DP’s girls tied WV with 75 points, but the Stags won the tiebreaker. Jackson Pring of the WV boys won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter runs and ran a leg on the winning 1,600 relay. For DP’s girls, Allison Ruygrok won the 100 and 200 and ran legs on two winning relays.
Golf
Alex Pounds shot a 1-over-par 73 to earn medalist honors and lead Coeur d’Alene (303) to the boys team title at the Lakeland Invitational at Twin Lakes Village Golf Club.
Lewiston (353) won the girls title by two shots over Moscow, which was led by medalist Kati Greear (78).
