Map identifies roadwork in Spokane County

Motorists in Spokane County who want to keep track of roadwork this spring and summer can get a big-picture look on a map that’s now available.

The map is a collaboration of local governments to coordinate projects and to keep the public informed about delays and detours.

The map shows 47 road and utility projects, including reconstruction of the Freya Street Bridge north of Springfield Avenue and construction of a railroad overpass on Havana Street south of Trent Avenue, which is a multi-agency project.

Spokane City Councilwoman Nancy McLaughlin said major improvements to Five Mile Road will be welcome in that fast-growing residential area, and the city’s portion of the project will be accompanied by a widening of the road in the county north of Strong Road to Waikiki Road.

In Spokane Valley, a major project will be the resurfacing of Sprague Avenue from University to Evergreen roads with the installation of concrete intersections at Pines, McDonald and Evergreen roads.

Some funding for the projects came from the federal economic stimulus bill, and several of the stimulus projects were not included on the map because that funding was recently announced, officials said.

Copies of the map are available at Spokane and Spokane Valley city halls, the county Public Works Building and Spokane Regional Transportation Council office, 221 W. First Ave.
