In brief: Green wins Canadian Open playoff
Golf: Nathan Green won the Canadian Open on Monday for his first PGA Tour victory, beating Retief Goosen with a par on the second hole of a playoff in the rain-delayed tournament in Oakville, Ontario.
After Green missed a 12-foot birdie attempt on the par-4 17th, Goosen’s 8-foot par try slid right, ending the first Monday finish in the national championship since 1988.
“It’s a huge surprise to finally win,” said Green, the 34-year-old former Canadian Tour player from Toronto – Toronto, Australia, that is. “This is where I started my pro career. I love coming up here. The people are great.”
Anthony Kim (66-73) and Jason Dufner (70-73) tied for third, four strokes back at 14 under in the event soaked by nearly 5 inches of rain the first four days. Lee Janzen (70-67), Brandt Snedeker (67-68) and Jerry Kelly (72-71) followed at 14 under.
Stephen Ames was the top Canadian, tying for eighth at 12 under after rounds of 72 and 67. Mike Weir (69-71) tied for 24th at 10 under.
DA wants Burress to do time in jail
Football: Manhattan’s district attorney says he wants former Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress to serve time in prison, the New York Post reported.
Robert Morgenthau told the newspaper that Burress, who shot himself with an unlicensed gun in November, was willing to agree to spend a year in jail, but prosecutors insisted on two.
“We’ve always taken the position that he’s going to have to go to jail, whether by trial or by plea,” Morgenthau told the Post.
Bobcats, Hornets to swap centers
Basketball: The Charlotte Bobcats are finalizing a trade that would send Emeka Okafor to the New Orleans Hornets for Tyson Chandler, two people familiar with the deal told the Associated Press.
The deal would be another roster shake up for the Bobcats since Larry Brown took over as coach last season, and is a gamble because Chandler has been plagued by a left toe injury and recently underwent surgery.
•Thunder, Wolves trade veterans: The Minnesota Timberwolves have picked up another point guard in a swap of veteran backups that will send Etan Thomas to Oklahoma City. Along with Thomas, Minnesota is sending two of its four second-round picks in the 2010 draft to Oklahoma City in exchange for guards Damien Wilkins and Chucky Atkins.
•Gooden likely to end up in Dallas: A source close to the negotiations tells the Associated Press that the Dallas Mavericks have reached an agreement with free agent big man Drew Gooden.
Mayfield accused of lying to federal court
Auto racing: NASCAR accused Jeremy Mayfield of lying to a federal court about the chronology of a second random drug test, offering to provide an audio tape of the conversation in which Mayfield was told to submit a sample. The driver says the telephone call went to voicemail.
The accusation came in court filings that ask U.S. District Court Judge Graham Mullen to lift the July 1 injunction he granted Mayfield so he could return to racing.
•Allstate ends sponsorship: Allstate Corp. is ending its sponsorship of the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard following a five-year sponsorship run at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Kukors sets second world record
Miscellany: Ariana Kukors set a second world record after being a fortunate late addition to the American team for the swimming world championships in Rome.
She comfortably beat Olympic champion Stephanie Rice for the gold medal.
Kukors broke Rice’s record from last year’s Beijing Olympics in Sunday’s semifinals, then shaved another 0.88 seconds off the mark in the gold medal race.
The 20-year-old Kukors clocked 2 minutes, 6.15 seconds. Rice settled for silver in 2:07.03, and Katinka Hosszu of Hungary was third in 2:07.46.
•Police say Forrest shot back: Atlanta police say former boxing champion Vernon Forrest exchanged gunfire with robbery suspects before being shot to death.
Lt. Keith Meadows said that investigators believe between 20 and 24 shots were fired from two guns. Meadows says police recovered Forrest’s gun and that one shell casing belonging to that gun was recovered.
•Two charged in Philadelphia beating: Two men have been charged with murder and a third is being sought in the beating death of a man outside the Philadelphia Phillies’ ballpark during a game.
Investigators say a confrontation began between two groups Saturday inside a pub attached to Citizens Bank Park. Both groups were kicked out but the fight resumed outside, where police say 22-year-old David Sale, of nearby Lansdale, was beaten and kicked repeatedly in the head.
Thirty-five-year-old Charles Bowers and 45-year-old Jim Grove have been charged with murder. A warrant was also issued for 28-year-old Francis Kirchner.
