Ichiro targets Wednesday

Ichiro Suzuki says he’s playing on Wednesday.

The Mariners’ All-Star and Gold Glove outfielder said Monday, upon rejoining his team following a bleeding ulcer, that he will be in Seattle’s lineup for its second home game of the season, against the Los Angeles Angels.

He said he felt so good it was “annoying” him.

The 35-year-old has missed Seattle’s first seven games while on the disabled list for the first time in his career.

EWU’s Edge out for 2009

Eastern Washington coach Beau Baldwin has announced that backup safety Will Edge will probably miss the 2009 season because of the gruesome leg injury he suffered on Saturday during the Eagles’ first spring scrimmage.

Edge, a junior-to-be from Tacoma and two-year letterwinner, dislocated his left ankle and broke the fibula in his left leg and underwent surgery on Sunday to repair the damage.

According to Baldwin, pins were inserted in Edge’s injured leg and won’t be removed until August, which makes it highly unlikely he will play again until 2010.

Edge’s injury brought a premature end to Saturday’s scrimmage, which Baldwin said will now resume at the end of practice Wednesday afternoon at about 5:30 and consist of 20-25 plays.

Ex-Cal, ASU coach dies

Bruce Snyder, whose 20-year career as a college coach included an unbeaten regular season at Arizona State, has died after a 10-month fight against cancer. He was 69.

Snyder died at his Phoenix home Monday, the university said.

He coached the Sun Devils from 1992-2000. His 1996 team went 11-0 in the regular season before a last-minute 20-17 loss to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.

Snyder also was the coach at Utah State from 1976-82 and California from 1987-91.

Snyder, who left coaching after he was fired by Arizona State in 2000, was diagnosed with cancer last June.

Snyder’s 1996 team, which upset two-time defending national champion and then-No. 1 Nebraska 19-0, had Jake Plummer at quarterback and Pat Tillman at linebacker.
