Whitworth adds 4 to Heritage Gallery
Two former football All-Americans, a basketball-baseball standout and a volleyball All-American form the 19th class that will be inducted into the Whitworth Heritage Gallery Hall of Fame during ceremonies Saturday.
George Elliott, a record- setting wide receiver (1963-66), and linebacker Larry Jacobson (1966-69) from Sandpoint, who gained NAIA first-team All- America recognition their senior years; two-sport star Bob Mandeville (1981-84); and Julie (Weatherred) Jones, a Ferris graduate who was a two-time Northwest Conference player of the year (2001-02) and AVCA first-team All-American as a junior during a stellar two-year career after transferring from Eastern Washington, are the 2008 hall of fame inductees.
They will be inducted during a breakfast at Whitworth Presbyterian Church’s Quall Hall at 8:30 a.m., then introduced at halftime of the Pirates’ football game that day against Willamette.

•Brian Maebius of Spokane, a four-year tennis letter-winner at Denison University who was an Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American in doubles as a junior in 1993, was inducted into the Granville, Ohio, school’s Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday.
He was a four-time all-conference selection and four-time NCAA participant.
Awards
June Daugherty, the Washington State women’s basketball coach, has been doubly honored by the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association.
Daugherty, a survivor of sudden cardiac arrest, was named the 2008 winner of the organization’s Public Spirit Award in recognition of her status as a national spokesman for health awareness.
SCAA also announced that in future years, the award will be called the June Daugherty Public Spirit Award.
College scene
Two Community Colleges of Spokane sophomores were the NWAACC cross country runners of the week last week.
Brad Serdar of Reardan earned the men’s award for a seventh-place finish in the Pier Park Invitational in Portland. He had a personal-best 26:04 for 8,000 meters.
Amy Durrance from Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls won women’s honors for a 12th-place finish in the same meet.
•Ashley Fargher of Spokane Falls, a University High graduate, earned one of 10 national catcher of the year awards from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
During her freshman season, Fargher hit .425 with 20 extra- base hits, including six home runs, and 42 RBIs while throwing out 11 of 19 base stealers to be the NWAACC selection on the list.
•Annie Brophy, a Notre Dame junior from Gonzaga Prep, had her first round below par of the fall golf season, a 1-under 71, to cap a 9-over 225 to tie for 11th as the Irish finished third in a Michigan State tournament last weekend.
Triathlon
Annie Warner, 29, of Nine Mile Falls, finished 10th out of 15 women in the elite division of the USA Triathlon Elite Nationals last weekend near Hillsboro, Ore. She timed 2 hours, 15 minutes, 33 seconds.
In women’s age-group competition, Sister Madonna Buder, 78, of Spokane was first in 75-79 (3:29:36); Eve Nelson, 42, of Spokane was fourth in 40-44 (2:18:48); and Cathy Armacost, 51, of Liberty Lake was 22nd in 50-54 (2:44:43).
Volleyball
Alyssa Wold, a 5-foot-10 setter/right-side hitter from West Valley, is Lewis-Clark State’s first signee for 2009, the Warriors announced.
A four-year starter at WV, Wold was a first-team All-Great Northern League selection as both a sophomore and junior, was league MVP as a junior and an all-state honorable mention.
