Mississippi upsets No. 4 Florida

Associated Press

Houston Nutt needed just five games to get a signature win at Mississippi.

Jevan Snead threw two touchdown passes, ran for another score and led the Rebels to a stunning 31-30 victory over No. 4 Florida on Saturday in Gainesville, Fla.

Snead, the former Florida recruit who backed out of his commitment when he learned the Gators were going after Tim Tebow, outplayed last year’s Heisman Trophy winner.

And he did it in The Swamp, where Florida (3-1, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) had won 21 of its last 22 games.

The victory came in Snead’s fifth career start and gave Nutt a huge win in his first season with Ole Miss (3-2, 1-1).

Snead was 9 of 20 passing for 185 yards, not great numbers, but he made plays when the Rebels needed them. His biggest was an 86-yard touchdown pass to Shay Hodge that put the Rebels ahead 31-24 with 5:26 to play.

(2) Oklahoma 35, TCU 10: At Norman, Okla., Sam Bradford threw for a career-best 411 yards and four touchdowns, Manuel Johnson set a school record with 206 yards receiving as the Sooners (4-0) avenged their last loss at Owen Field by beating the Horned Frogs (3-1).

With top-ranked Southern California and three other top 10 teams losing, Oklahoma made as strong a case as anyone to get back to No. 1 for the first time since it lost to Kansas State in the 2003 Big 12 championship game.

(5) LSU 34, Mississippi State 24: At Baton Rouge, La., Charles Scott surpassed 100 yards rushing for the fourth straight game and punched in two short touchdowns as the Tigers (4-0, 2-0 SEC) remained undefeated with a victory over the Bulldogs (1-4, 0-2).

Scott finished with 27 carries for 141 yards and kept LSU moving and the clock rolling.

(7) Texas 52, Arkansas 10: At Austin, Texas, Colt McCoy put up five touchdowns in another near-perfect start, and the Longhorns (4-0) routed the Razorbacks (2-2) to hand Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino an embarrassing debut in a border rivalry famous for close games.

McCoy completed 17 of 19 passes and threw three touchdowns, pushing his season total to 14. He also ran for a game-high 84 yards and two scores.

Michigan 27, (9) Wisconsin 25: At Ann Arbor, Mich., the Wolverines (2-2, 1-0 Big Ten) rallied from a 19-point halftime deficit, and when Wisconsin’s Allan Evridge misfired on a two-point conversion pass with 13 seconds left, Michigan had sealed a victory over the Badgers (3-1, 0-1).

Wisconsin seemed to tie the game and set up overtime with David Gilreath’s 22-yard touchdown catch and Travis Beckum’s reception for 2, but the conversion was negated by a penalty and the retry was a pass through the end zone.

(12) Penn State 38, (22) Illinois 24: At State College, Pa., Derrick Williams caught a touchdown pass, ran for a TD and returned a kickoff 94 yards for another score, and the Nittany Lions (5-0, 1-0 Big Ten) defeated the Illini (2-2, 0-1).

Daryll Clark threw for two scores and ran for a touchdown for Penn State.

(13) South Florida 41, North Carolina State 10: At Raleigh, N.C., Matt Grothe threw for 259 yards and a touchdown, completing his first 11 passes as the Bulls (5-0) defeated the Wolfpack (2-3).

Jamar Taylor and Mike Ford added 1-yard touchdown runs for South Florida.

(14) Ohio State 34, Minnesota 21: At Columbus, Ohio, tailback Chris “Beanie” Wells rushed for 106 yards in his first game in a month and quarterback Terrelle Pryor ran for two scores and threw for another to lead the Buckeyes (4-1, 1-0 Big Ten) past the Golden Gophers (4-1, 0-1).

Wells, out after injuring his right foot in the season-opener, carried 14 times and showed his old form by racing for 28 yards on his second attempt.

(15) Auburn 14, Tennessee 12: At Auburn, Ala., Jake Ricks recovered a fumble in the end zone and the Tigers (4-1, 2-1 SEC) sent the Volunteers (1-3, 0-2) to their worst start in 14 years with a victory.

Auburn’s anemic offense was bailed out when Ricks recovered a fumble in the end zone for the 14-6 lead in the second quarter after a botched handoff to Arian Foster.

Navy 24, (16) Wake Forest 17: At Winston-Salem, N.C., Eric Kettani rushed for a career-high 175 yards and backup quarterback Jarod Bryant scored the decisive touchdown late in the fourth quarter to give the Midshipmen (3-2) their first win over a ranked team in 23 years, a victory over the mistake-prone Demon Deacons (3-1).

Maryland 20, (20) Clemson 17: At Clemson, S.C., Chris Turner threw for a touchdown and Da’Rel Scott rushed for one to rally the Terrapins (4-1, 1-0 ACC) to their second straight Death Valley victory over the Tigers (3-2, 1-1).

Maryland came in as a big underdog, just like in 2006 here, against the preseason favorites for the conference title. And just like two years ago, the Terps overcame a second-half deficit for the win.

Houston 41, (23) East Carolina 24: At Greenville, N.C., Case Keenum threw for 399 yards and three touchdowns and the Cougars (2-3, 1-0 C-USA) earned their first win against a ranked opponent in a dozen years by beating the Pirates (3-2, 1-1).

Patrick Edwards had 11 catches for 146 yards and a score for Houston.
