City accepting funding applications

The city of Spokane’s Human Services Department is seeking proposals from social service agencies for 2009 City Human Services funding. The proposals are due Oct. 6 at 5 p.m.

Proposals must address one of the 2009 funding priorities as set by the City Council:

•To move homeless families and individuals within the city of Spokane out of homelessness and into stable living environments.

•To improve access to human services for the citizens.

•To improve physical and mental health for the citizens.

Proposals will be reviewed and scored by the Human Services Advisory Board.

Civic Theatre holding auditions

Spokane Civic Theatre Academy will be holding auditions for “A Christmas Carol, The Musical,” on Monday and Tuesday. The Box-n-Hat Players auditions will be Sept. 18.

The theater will perform “Rent School Edition” in May.

Auditions on Monday will be from 6 to 7 p.m. and are for children ages 7 to 15. Tuesday auditions will be at 6:30 p.m.

“A Christmas Carol” will require 10 to 15 men, appearing to be ages 18 to 65; 10 to 15 women, appearing to be ages 18 to 65; and eight to 10 children appearing to be ages 7 to 15.

Participants will be expected to perform a verse and a chorus from a contemporary Broadway musical as well as cold readings from the script.

The Box-n-Hat Players auditions will be at 4 p.m. for students ages 12 through 18.

Participants will be expected to perform a verse and a chorus from a Broadway musical. An accompanist will be provided, but actors are expected to bring their own sheet music in the key in which they will sing.

Registration fee is $225 and space is limited.

The Civic Theatre will offer adult acting classes on Saturdays from Sept. 22 through Nov. 15, 10 a.m. to noon.

Kitchen Engine marks anniversary

The Kitchen Engine, 621 W. Mallon Ave., will celebrate its two-year anniversary through Friday.

The event includes live demonstrations, factory representatives and sales. A pancake breakfast will held from 7 to 10 a.m. More than $2,000 worth of door prizes given away and local cooking school Apple Charlotte will be there giving a cooking class.

The kitchen accessory store has added approximately 1,100 square feet of floor space, including a full-scale kitchen and cooking classes.
