NFL

Burleson out for season

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Nate Burleson is out for the season with a knee injury.

Burleson tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee while trying to cut outside on a pass pattern on a rain-slicked field in Buffalo on Sunday during Seattle’s 34-10 loss in its season opener.

Coach Mike Holmgren said Seattle will also again be without veteran receivers Deion Branch and Bobby Engram for this Sunday’s game against San Francisco. Branch is seven months into recovery for reconstructive knee surgery. Engram may be out into October with a broken shoulder.

Seattle has three healthy receivers on its roster. Holmgren says the team may sign a veteran free agent.

Starting running back Maurice Morris will also miss at least the next two games with a sprained knee.

Cycling

Armstrong may race again

Lance Armstrong will end his retirement and hopes to compete in the 2009 Tour de France, according to a cycling journal report.

The 36-year-old seven-time Tour de France champion will compete in five road races with the Astana team in 2009, the cycling journal VeloNews reported on its Web site, citing anonymous sources.

However, Astana officials deny the report is true.

Charity

Phelps says he’ll donate $1 million

Michael Phelps is starting his own charity and the swimmer who won a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics made the first donation by committing the $1 million bonus he earned for his golden haul.

The Michael Phelps Foundation will launch an eight-city U.S. tour in collaboration with Speedo, Phelps’ swimsuit sponsor that paid him the bonus, to visit children and share his Olympic experiences.
