EWU deserved more credit
The article appearing in the sports section of the Aug. 31 edition of The Spokesman-Review regarding Eastern Washington University’s 49 -24 loss to Texas Tech did not give enough credit to the valiant effort of the EWU players and coaches.
After EWU fell behind 21-0 in the first quarter, the article stated, “There was nothing (quarterback Matt) Nichols, or any of his teammates, could do to claw their way back.”
What I witnessed at the game in Lubbock, Texas, was a team that did not quit and, as a result, trailed Texas Tech 28-17 at halftime and 35-24 at the end of the third quarter. The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal quoted (Texas Tech) head coach Mike Leach after the game praising EWU’s effort: “Early in the game we hit them in the mouth, really, really, hard. We did it over and over and over, offensively and defensively. They never got flustered and they slugged away the entire game. This is one of the teams I have the most respect for.” The Lubbock newspaper also quoted Nichols as saying, “(The) Eagles had earned the Red Raiders’ respect, (as) several Tech players complimented them after the game.”
The Eagles’ defense, particularly Ryan Kelley, deserves credit in limiting outstanding receiver Michael Crabtree to nine catches for 73 yards and one touchdown.
If you are a football fan who enjoys watching a good team, EWU has five home games this season. EWU is a team that will compete for the FCS national championship. They are that good.
