A.L. home run leader may miss rest of season

American League home run leader Carlos Quentin has a broken right wrist stemming from his own temper, and the Chicago White Sox left fielder will have surgery Monday that could sideline him for the rest of the season.

Quentin was injured Monday night in Cleveland. After fouling off a pitch while batting against Cliff Lee, Quentin hit his right hand on the bat as he was holding it with his left.

“What did happen was kind of unfortunate. It’s kind of something that, you know, I still have trouble believing that it happened that way,” Quentin said Friday.

During the surgery, a screw will be inserted into the wrist, and he will be re-evaluated in two to three weeks. Quentin is batting .288 with 36 homers and a team-high 100 RBIs.

Kinsler’s season ends

Ian Kinsler’s breakout season is done.

The Texas Rangers’ All-Star second baseman, and former Spokane Indian, will have season-ending surgery next week to repair a sports hernia.

Kinsler hit .319 with 18 homers, 71 RBIs and 41 doubles in 121 games this season.

Reds 10, Cubs 2: At Cincinnati, Jay Bruce hit his first career grand slam and Joey Votto added a two-run homer to lead the Reds past Chicago. The first-place Cubs’ losing streak reached a season-high six games.

Dodgers 7, Diamondbacks 0: At Los Angeles, Andre Ethier went 5 for 5 and drove in a career-high five runs, Derek Lowe held Arizona to two hits over eight innings and the Dodgers cut the Diamondbacks’ West lead to a half-game. The win was the Dodgers’ sixth in a row.

Blue Jays 6, Rays 4: At Toronto, Roy Halladay pitched seven solid innings and Alex Rios hit two homers to lead the Blue Jays to victory over Tampa Bay.

Red Sox 8, Rangers 1: At Arlington, Texas, Josh Beckett struck out seven in five scoreless innings in his first start in nearly three weeks to lead Boston past the Rangers. The Red Sox moved within 21/2 games of East-leading Tampa Bay and lead the wild card by 51/2 games over Minnesota.

White Sox 10, Angels 2: At Chicago, Juan Uribe homered twice and Mark Buehrle pitched six shutout innings to help the White Sox past Los Angeles. Chicago maintained its 11/2-game lead over Minnesota in the Central.

Twins 10, Tigers 2: At Minneapolis, Justin Morneau hit a grand slam and Francisco Liriano threw seven solid innings in a victory over Detroit.

Clearing the bases

The Red Sox got three key players back, activating right-hander Josh Beckett, third baseman Mike Lowell and first baseman Sean Casey from the 15-day disabled list. … St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jason Isringhausen will have season-ending surgery next week for a partially torn tendon and elbow tendinitis. … Right-hander Carlos Zambrano was upbeat about his chances of returning to the Chicago Cubs’ rotation in a week, optimistic that an anti-inflammatory injection and rest will be enough to heal his aching shoulder. … The Baltimore Orioles announced they will bring back manager Dave Trembley next season, exercising an option that was in the contract he signed last year.
