Leafs deal former Chief McCabe to Florida

The Toronto Maple Leafs traded veteran defenseman Bryan McCabe and a fourth-round draft pick to the Florida Panthers for defenseman Mike Van Ryn, ridding Toronto of its biggest contractual obligation.

McCabe a former Spokane Chief (1992-95), waived his no-trade clause to allow the deal.The 33-year-old McCabe had been one of the longest-serving Maple Leafs after being acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks on Oct. 2, 2000. He recently became a scapegoat for fans who thought his performance dipped after he signed a five-year, $28.75-million contract in 2005-06.

Swimming

Phelps donates bonus

Michael Phelps will put his $1 million bonus to good use, announcing plans to start a foundation promoting water safety and youth swimming.

Joe Gromek, president and CEO of Warnaco, Speedo’s U.S. parent company, presented a check to Phelps on NBC’s “Today” show.

The company, which has sponsored Phelps since he was 16, promised him a $1 million bonus if he tied or broke Mark Spitz’s record for most gold medals at a single Olympics.

•Olympic swimmer Eric Shanteau is recovering quickly from cancer surgery and already planning his return to the pool. He’ll return to his training base in Austin, Texas, next week and hopes to get back in the water sometime around Sept. 15.

In the meantime, Shanteau is setting up a new Web site that will document his story, provide links to cancer-fighting organizations and allow other victims of the disease to blog about their experiences.

Track and Field

Jamaicans win again

Asafa Powell matched the second-fastest 100 meters ever and Usain Bolt clocked the second-fastest 200 this year as the Jamaican friends and rivals dominated the Athletissima Grand Prix at Lausanne, Switzerland.

Powell’s time of 9.72 seconds equaled the old world record set by Bolt in New York City last May. Only Bolt has run faster, in his astonishing Olympic gold medal-winning run of 9.69 in Beijing last month.

As then, Bolt eased up before the finish line on Tuesday, crossing in 19.63 to leave himself 0.33 outside the world mark.

Dayron Robles of Cuba suffered a surprising defeat in the men’s 110-meter hurdles.

David Oliver of the U.S. won in 13.03 as Robles struck two of the final three hurdles, sending the last crashing.

Olympic champion LaShawn Merritt was another American winner in the 400, with a time of 43.98.

Storm disrupts games

Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern are considering moving their home games from Columbia, S.C. Saturday because of Tropical Storm Hanna. Forecasters expect it to strike somewhere in the Southeast by the end of the week.

•Nebraska football player Andy Christensen has been found not guilty of first degree sexual assault.

•Elmer Willhoite, an All-America guard on Southern California’s Rose Bowl championship team in 1952, has died. He was 78.

Basketball

Bird drives Seattle

Sue Bird scored 21 points and had nine assists to lead the Seattle Storm to an 83-69 victory in Atlanta over the woeful Dream.

Camille Little, who was traded from Atlanta to Seattle in June, scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds to help the Storm (19-10) move into a first-place tie with San Antonio in the West.

•Donyell Marshall and the Philadelphia 76ers agreed to a one-year contract.

The 6-foot-9 Marshall tied the NBA record for 3-pointers in a game with 12 against the Sixers in 2005.

•The Miami Heat signed former All-Star center Jamaal Magloire.

•Minnesota extended women’s basketball coach Pam Borton’s contract through the 2013-14 season.

Golf

Ryder Cup team set

Paul Azinger completed his American Ryder Cup team with captain’s picks, adding Chad Campbell, Steve Stricker, Hunter Mahan and Kentucky native J.B. Holmes to a team that will have six Ryder Cup rookies and no Tiger Woods.

The eight players who qualified were Phil Mickelson, Stewart Cink, Kenny Perry, Jim Furyk, Anthony Kim, Justin Leonard, Ben Curtis and Boo Weekley. Along with the four picks, they face a big chore.

The United States has not won the Ryder Cup since 1999. Europe has captured the cup eight of the last 11 times.

•Even with his golf done for the year, Tiger Woods found something to celebrate Tuesday: His wife is pregnant with their second child.

Ultimate Fighting

Couture back to UFC

The Ultimate Fighting Championship and its heavyweight champion Randy Couture have settled a public dispute and scheduled his return to the octagon.

Couture will fight Brock Lesnar on Nov. 15 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
