Free day at Museum of NI

The Museum of North Idaho, in front of Coeur d’Alene City Park at 115 Northwest Blvd., is hosting a free day today, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The free day will be the last opportunity to see the museum’s feature exhibit Wings Over North Idaho.

Wings Over North Idaho explores local aviation beginning with Weeks Field as the first municipally-owned airport in the United States. Weeks Field went on to play a vital role in pilot training during World War II. Coeur d’Alene Airport, built during WWII, continued to serve transportation and freight needs as well as Forest Service activities and forest fire fighting.

The museum will close for the season Friday. Hours are Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for children ages 6 to 16, children 6 and younger are free. A family rate is $7, for two adults, and children under 16.

For more information, call 664-3448 or e-mail dd@museumni.org or visit www.museumni.org.

ITD to close I-90 on ramp

The Idaho Transportation Department will close the westbound Northwest Boulevard on-ramp (Exit 11) on Interstate 90 Tuesday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The closure will allow maintenance crews to remove and repair a damaged guardrail. Motorists still will be able to access the Northwest Boulevard off-ramp during this time period.

The Idaho Transportation Department and the Idaho State Police warn motorists to slow down and pay attention when driving in work zones, where increased speeding fines and other penalties apply.

Prevent irrigation system contamination

The Coeur d’Alene Water Department recently issued guidelines for protection against irrigation system contamination.

To begin, the department instructs that the blow-off port where the air is introduced into the irrigation system is downstream of the approved backflow assembly. Ports installed upstream of the backflow assembly can allow oil and contaminated air from an air compressor tank to backflow into the portable water service, as well as the city water main.

If the irrigation system is protected by a pressure or atmosphere vacuum breaker, it must be removed before the introduction of the compressed air as the devices can be damaged if subjected to air from either upstream or downstream from the device.

The city of Coeur d’Alene code requires the backflow assembly be installed with unions so it can be removed before the introduction of compressed air and stored inside for the winter. If the assembly was installed without unions and it cannot be removed to prevent freezing, then it must be thoroughly drained.

Finally, an annual backflow assembly test is required in the spring to ensure the assembly is operating properly.

For more information call the City of Coeur d’Alene Water Department at 676-7408 or 769-2220, ext. 818.

Schweitzer lauded in magazines

Schweitzer Mountain Resort was honored in several snowsports magazines earlier this fall.

The resort was chosen as “Best Place to Ditch the Crowds” in Skiing Magazine’s first annual Resort Awards issue. SKI Magazine readers placed Schweitzer in the top 10 resorts in North America for their chairlift system. Powder Magazine claims Schweitzer has the “best park in the Pacific Northwest” and Snowboard Magazine says it’s a world class mountain with lots of soul.
