Lori Frank honored by science teachers group

Lori Frank, a teacher at Coeur d’Alene High School, was recently honored by the Idaho Science Teachers Association as a Region 1 Outstanding Secondary Science Teacher. She received a plaque for her recognition, as well as a $100 stipend to use for professional development or classroom supplies.

Frank began teaching with District 271 as a physical science teacher 25 years ago. In her career, she has developed a forestry program that is integrated with the University of Idaho. She is currently teaching two classes in forestry/wildlife and three sections of advanced biology. She also is an adviser to the high school’s forestry team.

Along with her husband, Frank has volunteered for four years for the Forest Service, identifying old-growth trees from the Clearwater River Basin to the Canadian border. That work has resulted in two areas of forest being considered for special federal designations.

UI students to learn dish about school lunches

University of Idaho students Stephanie Sciarrillo, of Coeur d’Alene, and Mary Boyer, of Pullman, will be fulfilling their community nutrition requirement for their dietician certification with hands-on experience in all school cafeterias in Kootenai County. They will be in the cafeterias through the end of October.

The students’ training includes federal rules and regulations governing school meals and help with marketing and promotions that encourage children to make healthy choices. District Nutrition Services Director Ed Ducar will have them take on District 271’s annual Vote for School Lunch campaign that involves students in all 10 elementary schools.

Sciarrillo and Boyer also will learn about school catering, help with the restaurant occupations class at Project CDA, work with pregnant teens on nutrition for themselves and their babies, and meet with the principal and staff. This is the first time the district has had interns in food service.

NIC’s Ohnemus honored for logo design

Amanda Ohnemus, a graphic design student at North Idaho College, was honored by the United Way of Kootenai County for a logo she designed for the Volunteer Action Center. She was awarded $200 for her design at a United Way kickoff breakfast earlier in September.

“We are very fortunate that our graphic design students are ‘on their marks’ and so responsive to community needs at any time,” said graphic design instructor Philippe Valle in a press release.

PSAT testing at CHS Wednesday

Coeur d’Alene High School juniors will be required to take a college preparation test on Wednesday, according to the school’s newsletter.

The PSAT is a preparation for the SAT and has a $15 fee. The exam also is required for juniors who would like to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Freshman and sophomores also may take the PSAT.

The ASVAB exam will determine aptitude for specific careers. If a junior does not sign up for the PSAT, the student must take the ASVAB. There is no charge for the ASVAB.
