Cougs agree to part ways with Schmidtke

The Spokesman-Review

Lakes High quarterback Calvin Schmidtke is being released from his letter of intent by Washington State University.

The university and Schmidtke agreed Tuesday evening that the Tacoma News Tribune All-Area Co-Player of the Year, who signed with the Cougars in February, would not attend WSU in the fall. According to the News Tribune, Schmidtke, 18, is dealing with numerous traffic and alcohol-related charges. He has received 11 citations from law enforcement in the past 18 months, seven of them for traffic violations.

“We feel this is in the best interest of both Washington State University and Calvin,” WSU coach Paul Wulff said in a media release. “We wish him well with his future endeavors.”
