Defending champions: Sehome boys and girls in 2A, King’s boys, Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) girls in 1A.
Local contenders: Lakeside should be a factor again with Chewelah joining the fray. West Valley’s girls should contend in 2A with Pullman and Cheney in the hunt for a trophy.
Top individual girls: In 2A, state discus leader Ashley Kenney and Melissa Mauro, the top 2A high jumper and hurdler contender, lead the WV charge. Pullman’s Anna Albrecht is the state shot put leader and defending champion in the shot and disc. Sprinter Shelby Maurer is the top threat for Cheney. … Lakeside’s Kayloni Jones is tripling in the distances again after placing in all three last year and is the 3,200 leader. Gale Nelson is a sprint threat for Lakeside and helps make the relay teams a threat. Also for Lakeside, Loreah Winlow is the top-seeded pole vaulter, Kelli Tikker is a placing high jumper and Gillian Charbonneau is a veteran discus thrower. Chewelah’s horizontal jumpers, defending long jump champion Erin Smith, Rebecca Johnstone and Liz Cobb, are among the best with Cobb and Johnstone joining Andrea Mills and freshman Samantha Beamer on the leading 400 and 800 relays. Freeman’s Melanie Frankart has the top throw in the javelin.
Top individual boys: Colville’s David Musson, the top returning javelin thrower in the state, has battled an injury but is throwing again and is a threat. Pullman hurdler Nick Cassleman is a threat. WV high jumper Nigel LaFountain has put himself in contention, as has Medical Lake quarter-miler Tyler Souders and Cheney thrower Griffon Jones. … Adam Cloaninger of Colfax has the best pole vault mark in 1A. Defending high jump champion Jared Beraducci is ranked second. Will Lohman of Chewelah is a threat in the shot and discus, as is Lakeside’s Tim Welch in the 3,200.
