Bulls top Rangers

KITCHENER, Ontario – One more Game 7.

That’s what the Kitchener Rangers and Belleville Bulls will play for the right to face the Spokane Chiefs in Sunday’s Memorial Cup championship game.

Keaton Turkiewicz scored the game-winning goal in overtime and the Bulls beat the Rangers 4-3 to conclude the round-robin portion of the Memorial Cup in Kitchener, Ontario.

Belleville will be the home team on Friday and have the last line change during any stoppage in play. That could be a factor in the game, considering it took the Rangers seven games to defeat the Bulls for the Ontario Hockey League title.

P.K. Subban, Shawn Matthias and Cory Tanaka also scored for Belleville (2-1) and goalie Mike Murphy finished with 54 saves.

Scott Tregunna, Mikkel Boedker and Yannick Webber scored during a 4-minute span in the first period to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead. But Rangers goaltender Josh Unice gave up the next four goals, allowing a three-goal lead to be compromised for the third time in the tournament for Kitchener – which gave up two three-goal leads in a 6-5 overtime win last Friday to Gatineau.

Spokane, the Western Hockey League champion, earned the bye to Sunday’s final with a 3-0 record in the preliminary round. The Chiefs eliminated the Gatineau Olympiques on Tuesday.

Matthias scored his second shorthanded goal of the tournament.
