CCS misses titles

The rare championship double Community Colleges of Spokane was hoping to add to its impressive regular-season resume failed to materialize during Monday’s final round of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Golf Championships at Indian Canyon Golf Course.

Instead, the Sasquatch men’s and women’s teams were relegated to the roles of also-rans as Walla Walla Community College and Columbia Basin College captured team titles in this year’s two-day, 36-hole event.

WWCC, led by Joseph Perkins, who finished second to Bellevue’s Richard Lee in the medalist standings, captured the men’s championship with a score of 582, just one stroke better than the 583 put together by Bellevue.

And CBC, riding the momentum from Sunday’s splendid opening round at Hangman Valley Golf Course, claimed the women’s title with a score of 482 that was seven strokes lower than the 489 posted by defending champion and tournament host CCS.

Still, CCS women’s coach Christie Delsanders had few complaints about the way her players – who finished 12-0 in the NWAACC’s East Region during the regular season – performed.

“We knew it was going to be tough,” she said. “We knew it was going to be good competition, and CBC is a solid team that played extremely well that first day.”

Delsanders’ Sasquatch team, which is comprised of all freshmen, turned in the low team total of the day Monday by posting a 243, but couldn’t overcome the eight-stroke edge CBC held heading into the final round.

“My girls played very, very well, and they’ve had an outstanding season,” said Delsanders, who had led the Sasquatch to four NWAACC titles in her six seasons as head coach. “I’m very proud of them, and I’m very excited to bring them all back next year.”

Women’s medalist honors went to Tacoma’s Monica Brown, who put together rounds of 78-78 for a 156 to edge CCS’s Katie Sorenson, a Central Valley High School graduate, by a single stroke.

CCS, after going 9-3 against East Region competition during the regular season, finished in a tie for third in the men’s team standings, and the Sasquatch’s Jason Azzarito put together rounds of 72-68 for 140 to claim third in the medalist race.
