Huskies overcome Cougars
The Washington Huskies scored eight runs in the seventh inning to rally past Washington State 12-3 in Pac-10 baseball Friday at Husky Ballpark in Seattle.
The game was scoreless into the bottom of the fifth before Washington broke through with two runs.
The Cougars took the lead on Paul Gran’s 10th home run, a three-run shot in the top of the sixth. But Washington’s Jorden Merry (8-0) kept the Cougars scoreless otherwise, allowing three runs on four hits, a walk and five strikeouts in seven innings.
Washington’s big inning was highlighted by a two-run, bases-loaded double by Kyle Conley and a two-run single by Brian Pearl.
Washington (30-16) remains in third place in the conference at 9-7. Washington State is 26-21, 5-11.
Track and field
WSU’s Rickey Moody is in second place in the men’s decathlon at the Pac-10 Championships in Tempe, Ariz.
Moody scored 4,030 points, 39 points fewer than Oregon’s Ashton Eaton, who held the first-day lead with 4,069 points. Moody was first in the long jump at 23 feet, 11 inches and first in the shot put (46-10 ¾). He was second in the 100 meters (10.87 seconds).
Arizona State’s Jacquelyn Johnson leads the heptathlon with 3,691 points. WSU freshman Angela Jensen is 13th with a personal-best 2,972 points.
•Idaho junior Matthew Wauters regained the school record in the hammer throw, winning the event with a throw of 209-11 at the Vandal Jamboree.
Wauters held the school mark before it was broken by Marcus Mattox, who threw 208-10 at the Mt. SAC Relays.
Idaho’s Gabby Midles won the women’s throw at 174-2, followed by EWU’s Erika Kirley-Price (173-4) and Idaho’s Nikita Amy (146-6).
The meet continues today at 11 a.m.
Idaho athletes also competed in the Oregon Twilight meet at Eugene. Two Vandals – Bastien Tardy and Allix Lee-Painter – posted NCAA regional qualifying marks, giving Idaho 18 spots in the regional.
Tardy finished 14th with a personal-best time of 1 minute, 50.11 seconds in the men’s 800 meters. Lee-Painter placed seventh in the women’s 3,200 meters with a time of 10:37.24.
Soccer
Jay Vela had two goals and one assist as the Spokane Spiders (1-1) defeated the Tacoma Tide 5-2 at Greyhound Park in USL Premier Development League play.
Men’s basketball
Alaska player of the year Kevin Winford has signed a letter of intent to attend Eastern Washington and play for the Eagles, EWU coach Kirk Earlywine announced.
Winford, a 5-foot-11 point guard, averaged 22 points, five rebounds and four assists this season for Bartlett High School in Anchorage.
