Too much asked of troops

The Spokesman-Review

I think many people share my view: I support our troops in Iraq, but the story on the front page of the Sunday issue, on the loss of Army Staff Sgt. Caldwell, is the reason I also deplore America’s decision to remain active in the Iraq war.

The military is overburdened with our continued efforts in Iraq and the resurgence of the Taliban in Afghanistan. Too many young men and women are taking on additional tours of duty; for many, the third or fourth is their final tour.

God bless these brave men and women and their families. As a nation, I am certain we can do a better job of managing our resources (especially our human resources), and strengthen our role as mediator in conflicts around the world.

The lives of our children is too high a price to pay.
