Region in brief: Beach cleanup today

Beginning at 10 a.m. today, the North Idaho College American Indian Student Alliance, Outdoor Pursuits and the Coeur d’Alene Tribe are sponsoring a clean-up of NIC’s Yap-Keehn-Um Beach.

A barbecue and open beach volleyball will be held after the clean-up.

The event is free and open to the public.

Annual Clay Invitational Friday

The Art Spirit Gallery, 415 Sherman Ave., is holding its ninth annual Clay Invitational Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. The event will include a reception in conjunction with the Downtown Artwalk.

The invitational features the following artists and a Southwest Pottery Collection. The show will run through May 31.

Playhouse hosting theater camps

The Lake City Playhouse, 1320 E. Garden Ave., will offer a number of theater education camps during the summer.

The Huckleberry Workshops serve as an introduction to the performing arts, where children will be taking classes in theater, dance, music, creative writing and fine arts. The classes will be held on June 9 to 20, July 21 to Aug. 1, and Aug. 11 to 22 for ages 7 to 18. Workshops will meet from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Toastmasters contest winner

Gina Rone of Coeur d’Alene Toastmasters Club No. 247 recently received third place in the competitive District Speech Contest at the District 9 Toastmasters Spring Conference in Spokane Valley. Rone competed with Mary Jo Kringas of the Coeur d’Alene Toastmasters, and Sharon Hebert and Kathi Kaufman of Lake City Toastmasters Club No. 7288 represented Division D (comprised of 13 clubs from Sandpoint to Lewiston) in the International Speech and Evaluation Contests, respectively.

The International Speech contest is held each year with winners hoping to compete at the International level. Contestants prepare an original five to seven minute speech.

NIC student wins 1st in Skills contest

Ray Hinshaw, a North Idaho College Collision Repair Technology student, was awarded first place at the annual Idaho Skills USA state competition in Boise in April.

He received more than $2,500 in tools and a $500 scholarship toward travel costs to the National Skills USA competition in Kansas City, Mo., on June 23 through 27.

Hinshaw competed among 30 other college contestants in hands-on categories, including small dent repair, refinishing, estimating, structural analysis and welding. Participants also were judged on their performance on a written test, interview and resume.

Collision Repair Technology is a 10-month professional-technical program at NIC.
